Activists from the Beko Rights Klub, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders and People's Action for Democracy have called for a Sovereign National Conference to end the ‘misfortunes’ of democracy and representative government in the country.
The groups during the 7th anniversary of late human rights activist, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, on Sunday, organised a rally, procession to Beko’s Tomb at Ikoyi Cemetery
and proceeded to the Beko’s Garden for Colloquium.
Beko was a dedicated medical doctor, humanists, patriot, committed human rights and pro – democracy activists in Nigeria before his death on February 10, 2006.
According to the convener of the groups, Mr. Debo Adeniran, noted that the way forward for Nigeria is to have a national conference where all yearnings and aspiration could be solved.
He said, “SNC is the way forward. It is the answer to Nigeria’s challenges. It is the only means to ensure unity. Our leaders have failed us; we don’t seem to be one again because our leaders are not longer using one mind with us. Where is the democracy Beko fought for? Where is liberation? Why is it becoming difficult for us to exercise our freedom? The answer to all these questions is the SNC.
“It is so sad that our government both at the state and federal levels have lost focus completely. When the Federal Government should be chasing and prosecuting elastic criminals that steal in hundreds of billions, it is busy chasing feeble Boko Haram and militant who took to crimes because of the wickedness of our leaders, both in the past and present.”
A former presidential candidate, Martin Onovo, blamed the leadership of the country for its challenges, nothing that there was need to create a platform for Nigerians to discuss their differences.
He said, “We should be able to change leaders with our votes, but since votes don’t count we have lost our democratic power to elect or to change our leadership. We must enforce democratic power to turn the system from criminocracy to democracy and then, we may fare better.
