‘Beggars’ arrest will end social nuisance’

The beggars.
A socio-political pressure organisation, Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Group, says efforts by the Lagos State Government to stop street begging will end “social nuisance” in the state.

The government had arrested and later prosecuted no fewer than 39 beggars in its Special Offences Court in Alausa, Ikeja, for soliciting alms.

The group, in a statement by its Chairman, Dayo Ogunlana and secretary Razaq Olokobe, said the development was good, adding that beggars were constituting nuisance to the state.

It urged street beggars in the state to desist from the act to avoid further arrests.

The statement said, “Why should people constitute nuisance to the society simply because the government has been lenient and accommodating to all?

“Anybody, who finds it difficult to obey law and order by following due process in doing things according to the dictate of the mega city as obtainable globally should excuse us.
Fashola’s administration should be commended for its efforts at making life worth its while in the state.”
