Mismanagement responsible for Nigeria’s failure—Ribadu
The Chairman, Petroleum Revenue Special Task Force, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has said mismanagement is the cause of the country’s failure.
Ribadu made this known at the 2012 Management Day of the Nigerian Institute of Management on Tuesday in Lagos.
He said, “In any way we decide to view it, management has received a bloody nose in our country, and our tribe of managers cannot escape the humiliation of failing to provide leadership.
“Recall your last visit to a true factory, take a broad view of many of our national monuments, even colleges, health centres, car assembly plants, steel mills, agricultural projects, and the endless lists of failed national institutions. Undoubtedly, there is a major management deficit in the land, and the result is that our country is far away from where it ought to be.”
He noted that mismanagement should be blamed for the social unrest in the nation, adding that the military had also caused more harm than good.
The former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission identified some of the problems confronting the nation to include phenomenal misuse of huge oil resources, incessant ethnic and religious intolerance, monumental corruption, massive brain drain, and bitter experience of terrorism.
He also condemned the notion that the Constitution was responsible for the problems of the country.
Ribadu added, “I am not one of those who believe that Nigeria’s problem is with its laws, as if that alone will take us to our destination. My take is that our problem is largely that of management.
“Bad managers cannot operate the best laws, the best of businesses and the best of countries.”
He stressed that Nigeria had failed in all ramifications when compared to African countries like Tanzania and Ghana.
“Tanzania had the same kind of challenges we had at independence. But its leaders had better manegerial know hows. We were not that lucky with our managers. We took the first wrong steps and we are paying dearly for it ever since independence,” he said.
Ribadu wondered why leaders in the country had always decided to loot the treasury, whereas, they manage their own businesses effectively.
