Malnutrition responsible for sicknesses in children - Mrs Amosun

WIFE of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, has blamed malnutrition for the increasing rate of sicknesses among children in the country.

Amosun, who was represented by Mrs. Olufunmilayo Adesegun, the wife of the state deputy governor, said this during the inauguration of the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week on Monday in Abeokuta.

According to her, giving children nourished meals and adequate breast feeding would protect them against diseases.

She said, "It is pertinent to mention that malnutrition accounts for 54 per cent of childhood ailments.

"A number of our children are given meals that are deficient in essential nutrients. If our children are adequately fed with nourished meals, they would have the needed immunity against diseases responsible for child mortality."

She explained that the MNCH week was to enlighten and provide affordable services to the people that would promote safe child birth delivery.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who said many ailments could be prevented through cleanliness, urged nursing and pregnant women to make use of health facilities in the state.

He said, "The MNCH week will take place in every local government to show our commitment to qualitative maternity health delivery. Mothers should abide by recommendations of the medical experts on cleanliness and maternity."

The Information Officer, Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Alhaja Waliyat Odemakin, said the programme was to cater for women during and after delivery.
