Lecturer seeks students’ participation in governance, constitution review
A Senior Lecturer at the Olabisi Onabanjo
University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Mr. Abdul-Hakeem Adebayo, has called on
students in various institutions to participate in the on-going constitutional
review and governance of the country.
The lecturer gave the advice on Sunday at a
symposium organised by the Lagos State University Muslim Community.
According to him, students should be allowed to
make inputs in moulding the future of the country.
He said, “Much of participation in governance is
yet to be done by the students and I think it is because of the kind of
awareness that is being created and their engagement in internet browsing,
social networking and others. The psyche of the students must be changed from
this social networking and they should realise that they have a role to play in
the development of the nation.
“They must become conscious that if they don’t
play that role, the elders will determine what their future will be. They have a
role to play, part of which is to contribute to governance, especially in terms
of constitutional review and this will enable them to hold their destiny in
their own hands.”
He added, “Government must make the students and
youth know that they have a role to play in the fate of the nation. The
government of every nation must provide the right education. They must use
Nigeria’s resources to give the right education that is holistic, not
necessarily by awarding certificates; they should give both civic and religious
education.”
