1934 -- The Night of the Long Knives which saw Adolf Hitler exterminated his political rivals in Germany took place.
1937 -- The world's first emergency telephone number, 999 was introduced in London.
1960 -- Congo gained its independence from Belgium.
1966 -- Former world heavyweight boxing champion, 'Iron' Mike Tyson was born.
1969 -- Nigeria under Gen Yakubu Gowon banned the Red Cross & other aid agencies to Biafra Republic during the civil war
1985 -- 39 American hostages from an hijacked TWA Flight 847 were freed in Beirut after being held for 17 days.
1986 -- The United States Supreme Court ruled that states can outlaw homosexual acts between consenting adults.
2005 -- Spain became the third country to legalize the same-sex marriage.
2009 -- Yemenia Flight 626 crashed into the Indian Ocean, near Comoros, killing all but one of the 153 passengers and crew on board.
