Pyeongchang: Samsung Denies Allegation Of Lobbying IOC Officials
South Korean tech giant and the Worldwide Olympic Partner Samsung on Tuesday refuted claims that it had lobbied the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials to get their votes for Pyeongchang bid to host the Winter Games.
South Korean SBS TV claimed that Samsung lobbied the IOC officials to get them vote for Pyeongchang as the host city for 2018 in return for various marketing and sponsorship contracts.
"The company reviewed everything and legally sponsored the committee, just the same as other general sponsorship agreements it has signed," Samsung was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency.
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee is a longtime member of the IOC.
Convicted of tax evasion, he was granted a special presidential pardon in 2009 reportedly so that he could stay on the IOC and promote Pyeongchang bid.
