Artisan Fall Inside Deep Well In Lagos
Officials of Lagos State Fire Service on Monday rescued a man, Billiaminu Abdullahi, 37, from a 150ft deep well in Igando, a suburb of Lagos, an official said.
Addressing newsmen at Alausa, Lagos, on Tuesday, the Public Affairs Officer of the service, Mrs Bola Ajao, said Abdullahi was rescued about 2 p.m.
Ajao said the victim, a local artisan, was engaged to dig the well and in the process, slipped and fell inside.
She said officers of the service responded to a distress call about 1.30 p.m. from Ikotun Fire Station and promptly raced to the scene where they met the victim while he was struggling for life inside the well.
"Our team got to the scene after the distress call. The rescue operations were almost impossible considering the depth of the well and the trapping of the victim by materials inside the well.
"But with the availability and timely deployment of modern equipment, we were able to save the man from the brink of death in a nine-minute operation," Ajao said.
"The fire service with support from men of the Nigerian Police Force, rescued the man alive and he was taken to the General Hospital in Igando for medical attention, " she said.
Ajao urged residents to take safety seriously and not hesitate in making emergency calls to fire stations at the instance of a fire outbreak or other related emergencies.
She urged residents to adhere to basic safety tips guiding the digging, rehabilitation and working inside deep wells or confined spaces.
