Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps Arrests 19 Suspects

The Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps on Monday said it had arrested 19 suspected cult members at Ibeju-Lekki in an operation to rid the neighborhood of miscreants.

The Neighborhood Corps Chairman, retired DIG Isreal Ajao, said the suspects were arrested following a tip-off from the public.

Ajao, who commended members of the community for the information, said that the operation to rid the neighborhoods of miscreants would be carried out in every nook and cranny of the state.

"In our efforts to rid the neighborhoods of criminals, we partnered with community leaders and public-spirited individuals to go to the grassroots and pick up hoodlums making life unbearable for people.

"On Jan. 19, the public gave us useful hints on activities of suspected cult members whom we arrested
at 12 a.m. at various locations in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.

"Most of the suspects had confessed to being members of different cult groups. We also discovered that some of the suspects were members of "Omije cult", they had the tear drop mark which translates to making their victims shed tears.

"You will agree with me that the menace of cult activities is ravaging our society. This is why we work with the police to ensure that the society is free.

"When we have information, we share with the police and when we make arrests, we hand the suspects over to police to ascertain if the hoodlums are linked with a crime committed in the past.

" As far as we are concerned, the suspects had confessed and they also engage in the use of drugs which aids their criminal acts."

Ajao explained that the operation of the corps was clear the neighborhood of miscreants starting from Ibeju-Lekki. We hereby appeal to members of the public not to hesitate in sharing information with security agents," he said.

One of the suspects, Lawal Abogunlojo, told journalists that he was lured into joining the "Eye cult" group in 2015.

"I did not know what I was getting into. I was tricked to where I was initiated in 2015. Since then I have been a member of the group.

"I work at an aluminum company and I have never killed anyone. I am just an ordinary member of the group," he said. (
