Proffer solutions to Nigeria’s economic woes, Ajimobi charges ICAN

Friday, March 04, 2016

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has challenged members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to use their experience to proffer solutions to the economic downturn currently besetting the country.

The governor gave the charge while welcoming the national executive members of the institute led by the President, Chief Samuel Deru who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Ibadan,
on Tuesday.

Ajimobi also stressed the need for ICAN to support his administration in its efforts at shoring up its internally generated revenue (IGR), given the sharp drop in the allocation accruing to the state from the Federation Account.

The governor said, ``You will agree with me that Nigeria is currently facing serious economic challenges. This is the time we need your members to use their expertise to proffer solutions that will bail the country out of the economic crisis.

``There is nothing wrong if your institute moves round the states to have firsthand knowledge of their financial challenges. You can then come up with suggestions and probable solutions to assist in improving the country's economy after a careful appraisal.

``More importantly, we need your support in our state in the area of IGR in terms of presenting propositions that will assist us in our internally generated revenue drive."

According to him, such partnership will assist his government in meeting its financial needs, especially as regards payment of salaries as well as execution of other development projects that will have direct impact on the people.

Ajimobi observed that as a foremost institute in the training of accountants in Nigeria, ICAN should expand its curriculum to lay more emphasis on management of resources rather than mere keeping of records of resources.

He also harped on the need for the institute to improve on members' interpersonal, business and group communication skills, which, he said, would further enhance their performances in the discharge of their duties.

The governor said, ``I will like to observe that ICAN, as a foremost institute in the training of accountants, should expand its curriculum to lay emphasis on management of resources, rather than merely keeping records of resources and financial activities of establishments. Those who keep records of activities will be able to manage the company."

Earlier in his remarks, the ICAN president pledged the support of the institute to the state government towards improving its dwindling resources occasioned by the pervading economic downturn.

Deru informed the governor that he was in Ibadan to inaugurate a lecture theatre constructed by ICAN for the accounting students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

He urged the state government to sponsor accountants in the civil service for more training organized by the institute to enhance their performances.

The ICAN boss said, "The donation of the lecture theatre is part of our efforts aimed at encouraging the development of accounting in the country. We also want to partner the state government in capacity building.

"We are impressed by the performance of our members in the Oyo State public service. We also want to use this opportunity that we don't condone corruption and fraud in ICAN. We have no sacred cow. Any member found compromising will face the full wrath of our tribunal. In fact one is coming up on Friday.

``We are urging you to diversify the economy of this state and increase your tax base. We also advise that you create an enabling environment for private businesses to grow. This will enhance economic growth of the state."

He used the opportunity to commiserate with governor and people of the state on the demise of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, Odugade 1.
