Ooni messenger stripped as fight broke among traditional rulers

Sunday, February 07, 2016

One of the messengers of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, was on Thursday stripped when a fight broke during the monthly meeting of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers.
It was gathered that the cloth of the messenger was torn when traditional rulers refused the order of the Ooni to be implemented.
It was gathered that the ooni had instructed the messengers to put his special chair at the front for the meeting when Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran and his supporters resisted.
It would be recalled that there was palpable fear and a mild drama at the last Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers meeting when the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II arrived a bit late.
It was learnt that some of the traditional rulers had begun to nurse fear when the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran almost kick-started the meeting without Ooni's presence.
It would be recalled that barely one week to the official presentation of staff and instrument of office to the 41-year-old Ooni Ogunwusi, when the Owa, while briefing the press at the end of the Obas, monthly meeting in Osogbo, said his councils' members had unanimously appointed him the substantive hairman of the state traditional council of Obas.
Oba Aromolaran acted as the chairman of the state council of Obas after the demise of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, on July 28, 2015.
Our correspondent learnt that at the commencement of the first meeting, the Owa sat in the position expected to be occupied by the Ooni.
But tension was doused when Oba Aromolaran introduced himself as the vice chairman of the council at the December  2015 meeting which was the maiden meeting attended by the Ooni after his inauguration.
When the feared crisis resurfaced on Thursday, traditional rulers moved a motion to postpone indefinitely to stop the fight which broke out over the position of the chairman of the council.
When contacted, spokesperson for the Ooni's Palace, Mr. Moses Olafare, insisted that the Ooni remained the permanent chairman of the council.
He said, "Ooni will not want to be drawn into what happened. But he ( Ooni) reminded the permanent chairman according to the law."
It was however learnt that the Ooni paid a surprise visit to the palace of the Owa to settle the rancour.
During the visit, the Ooni and Owa were reported to have hugged themselves after an indoor meeting.
