Osun airport revised to N11bn not N15bn, says engineer

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

airportAgainst the background of criticisms of the MKO Abiola International Airport, Ido Osun, in Osun State, the Consultant Engineer to State Government on the project, Engineer Wemimo Adebajo, has said that the airport had been revised to N11billion and not to N15billion from the initial N7.5billion.

He said this during a tour of the facilities at the airport with journalists aimed at clarifying allegation by the opposition.

While speaking on the percentage of work done at the airport noted that government, having spent N2.7 billion out of the revised total cost of N11billion for the project, Adebajo said that the work could be said to have reached 25 percent.

He told journalists that the tour of the facilities became germane to allow them to be adequately informed about the magnitude of the work done, in order to situate the criticisms of the opposition in a proper context.

According to him, the runway of the airport waiting to be laid with 500 mm asphalt is 3.5 kilometre in length, 12.3 metres excavation and re-filling with laterite.

He added that both sides of the runway were equipped, ab initio, with water pipes, which would be the first of its kind in Nigeria.

He explained that with such a feature, the airport would be equipped with facilities that would make emergency fire-fighting readily available near the runway, in case of any emergency landing or fire outbreak.

He pointed out that though the runway had not been completed, the runway, at its present state, could be used by any pilot to land an aircraft, in case of an emergency.
