The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) branch held its maiden edition of Writing, Debate and Spelling Bee (WRIDS) today at Auditorium Two.
The
Programme, put together by the Executives of the Department (EXMIUS
ICTUM 15), had participants from each level ( Part 1 to Part 4).
The Head of Department of English Language, Prof. Niyi Okunnoye, in his address, acknowledged the efforts of the Leaders of the association and commended their 'Responsible' leadership.
The Writing/ Essay Competition Tagged: " The Scientific Maximum Shishi (SMS) as a means of curbing social vices among OAU students has lost its effectiveness in recent times."
The winner, Egedegbe Gracious, a Part 2 student of the department was also given 50 percent scholarship.
Miss Cynthia, a Part 1 student won the Spelling Bee contest and was also awarded another 50 per cent scholarship, worth the sum of 10,000 naira.
Mr Adeyemo Emmanuel , also a Part 1 student, won the Debate competition which was tagged:
"Considering output, do you think OAU is currently positioned to produce seasoned graduates".
There were also consolation prizes for other participants of the competitions.
The audience also participated in the programme as students
were tasked to mention 10 african texts and their authors which was won
by a Part 3 student of the department.
Activities of the branch continue with NASELS CU, starting next Monday at the Sport Complex.
The
President, Sodiq Oyeleke, who was represented by the association's
Assistant Secretary said, "This is one of our programmes to boost
academics. We have also initiated NASELS ALL STAR CONTEST (NAC), and NASELS
EMPOWEREMENT PROGRAMME (NAP) among others, to boost creativity and make graduate of the Department outstanding in the Labour market. We hope to
continuously get the needed support from you."
