Residents protest over high bills, poor power supply
As a means to show their grievances, Osogbo residents have trooped to the street to protest high bills without constant power supply by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Center, Osogbo.
The placard carrying protesters were sighted chanting and shouting anti-IBEDC comments at the front gate of their office.
One of the protester, Mr Rasheed Salawu, said he owned a bungalow with eight rooms and currently charged N205,326.29 this month.
Another protester, Charles Steven, who claimed to be a business man said with his shop at Ita-olokan the situation have been repeating itself for long and each time they approach the power company they usually have different story to tell.
He said, "We hope they will listen to us through this protest and reversed all this problem because we can't be paying for what we don't use, We are here today to request that our billing should be corrected
"Before we carry out this protest we have inform the commissioner for police and he gave us go ahead,that is why you see the police with us to protect us."
Speaking on behalf of IBEDC,Engineer AbdulRazaq Jimoh, who is the business hub technician said the category of those protesters are those with incorrect meters.
He said, "Those who have incorrect meter are charge on the average consumption of those with correct meter within the same community.
"The government knows they can''t manage the power sector very well and that is why is been handle by the private investor and the people can''t expect the IBEDC to give power supply without charges.
"We are not cheating anybody here. The revenue get on the power sector is what the government also used to provide social amenities to the people."
