100,000 females for MSSN Lagos World Hijab Day Walk

No fewer than 100,000 Muslims are expected to partake in a walk to support the use of Hijab in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

The walk is organised by the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit in commemoration of the annual World Hijab Day (WHD) held all over the world.

World Hijab Day was started by Nazma Khan, a Bangladesh lady in New York in 2013. The day came into being over misconceptions and wrong interpretations of what Hijab represents and denial of its usage in some part of the World.

Commenting on the walk, expected to hold on February 1, Amirah (female president) of MSSN LSAU, Hajia Hafsa Badru, called for maximum participation of both Muslims and non-muslims.
She said, "World Hijab Day will be observed in over 100 countries of the world. Non-Muslims are also invited to wear the Hijab for a day and share their experience with the world.

"The Hijab Day in Lagos, Nigeria will feature the Hijab Walk with an expected hundred thousand  sisters walking from Maryland  through the streets of  Lagos State.‎ The event is strictly for females and you can visit  our website - www.mssnlagos.net‎‎ - for more information."

While explaining that the use of Hijab was a sign of obedience to their creator (Allah), she urged institutions, corporate bodies and individuals at all levels in Lagos State and Nigeria not to promote victimisation of Muslim females wearing it.

She said, "Hijab is being used in different part of the world. The denial of its usage in Lagos and other parts in Nigeria is a shame. We want our freedom of religion to be fully granted to us.

‎ "Wearing the Hijab is a submission to the commandment of our creator and not a means of oppression from the males or anyone, hence its our choice. ‎The Hijab is to protect us from molestation and makes us fulfilled as believers. We should be allowed to use it under no condition."

The Muslim students female leader, however, called on Nigerians who desire a sane and modest society to support Hijab usage.

"Hijab is our golden shield and we can't do without it. It is also very good for societal growth. People who put it on should be seen as agents of societal reform and embraced. We understand that Nigeria is a multi-religious country, we want to see it grow and that will come through the decency, morality among other virtues that Hijab represent," she added.
