Lawmaker expresses worry over unemployment

August 27, 2014 by Sodiq Oyeleke

The lawmaker representing Lagos-East senatorial district, Mr. Gbenga Ashafa has expressed worry over the growing rate of unemployment in the country.
He spoke during an empowerment programme, which he organised for about 1000 members of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress.
Ashafa explained that the empowerment programme was to reduce the level of unemployment in his constituency, adding that it would encourage and promote vocational skills among his constituents.
Among the distributed items to a selected 500 beneficiaries were deep freezers, vulcanising machines, hair dryers, barbing kits, generators and sewing machines as well as provision of financial grants to another set of 500 female party members in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Lekki Local Council Development Area.
He said, "This is our own effort to ensure that the worrisome unemployment is considerably reduced to the barest minimum in our society and this shows that the APC feels the plight of the Nigerian people. What we are promoting among our party members today is to discourage our people from seeking white collar jobs that are visibly unavailable, I believe that if every individual can rely on their skills rather than certificates, this would go a long way to reducing the unemployment level in the society. I know a lot of graduates that are now professional photographers, fashion designers who are doing well without using their certificates."
