Striking lecturers and authorities of Lagos State University have differed over the commencement of academic activities in the university.
While the university management through its Public Relations Officer, Kayode Sutton, said issues that resulted to strike in the school had been resolved, the lecturers insisted that the industrial action continued.
Lecturers of the school under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities, had embarked on strike in May over fee hike among other issues in the institution
Sutton in a statement said, "The LASU authorities and the institution's chapter of ASUU have signed an agreement that would signal the end of the strike action embarked upon by the latter in May, 2014.
"In an exhaustive meeting which ran into the late hours of Tuesday, July 8, the two parties reached a truce and put pen to paper on some issues which led to the strike action that partially grounded academic activities in the Institution for several weeks.
"The university management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, and the staff union, led by Dr. Adekunle Idris, after the deliberations resolved to sheath their swords for peace to reign in LASU in the interest of the students and the entire university community."
But Idris in a statement on Thursday said the union had not called off its strike, stating that its resolution with the management did not mean that lecturers had resumed to duty.
He said, "ASUU-LASU remains on strike until the congress decides otherwise. The exco of our union had a meeting with the Appointments and Promotions (Academic) Committee and the university administration on Wednesday July 2, 2014, which resulted in some resolutions.
"As directed by congress, the resolutions have been forwarded to the Governing Council (our employers) for ratification/consent. Thereafter, congress will meet to review the ongoing strike action. Until then, we remain on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action. The union is hopeful that the Governing Council will expeditiously do the needful so that congress can reconvene soonest."
