‘Primary education needs more attention’
May 9, 2014 by Sodiq Oyeleke
The
lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the House of
Representatives, Gbenga Ashafa, has urged government at all levels to
intensify their efforts in developing primary education.
He spoke during the inauguration of some classrooms at the Community Nursery/Primary School, Magodo, Shangisha.
According to Ashafa, many pupils in the
country do not have the needed facilities that will enable them to
compete favourably with their counter-parts from across the world.
He said, “Our primary education still
need more attention and it must be collectively done. In order to ensure
that our children have proper upbringing and excellent performance in
schools, especially at the foundation of learning, the government must
provide them with conducive learning environment.”
The senator, a former Executive Secretary
of the Lands Bureau in Lagos, added, “There were plans by some wealthy
people in the state to convert part of the land of Community Primary
School to residential structures during my tenure as the Executive
Secretary in Lagos Lands Bureau but I resisted the move. If I had done
so, I would have made the pupils to learn in confinement.
“I never knew I would be a senator today;
I never knew I would facilitate a classroom project in this school. If I
had succumbed to pressure, this new block of classrooms would not have
had space to be sited.”
Ashafa urged parents and guardians to support the authorities in giving their children and wards the best of education.
“I want to use this medium to advise all
our parents and guardians to stop the act of using our promising
children for street trading as this often exposes them to danger and can
also lead to lack of concentration in their studies,” he said.
The state Commissioner for Education,
Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, said the senator’s resolve to support primary
education in the state would above all reflect in national development.
She commended the lawmaker, noting that primary education was the foundation for societal progress and development.
She said, “The state government is proud
of the activities of our senator, which are geared towards improving on
the standard we have put in place in Lagos. We will continue to invest
in the future of our children by providing modern classrooms and
curriculum. We welcome projects like this because they will help to
further develop primary education.”
