Ministry drums support for inter-modal transport system
The
Ministry of Transportation has called on stakeholders in the transport
industry to embrace inter-modal system for an effective movement of
goods and services.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry,
Mr. Nebolisa Emodi, gave the advice at the 2013 National Council on
Transport technical session in Lagos on Monday.
He said the inter-modal system, if supported, would enhance the sustainability of roads.
According to him, there is need for
public-private partnership for the expansion of terminals and new
facilities that are vital for transport facilities.
He said, “You will no doubt agree that
there is still a lot to be done to achieve the vibrant and responsive
transport system of our dream. Your active and constructive
participation will set a pace for the necessary changes and achieve the
effective and efficient transport system we all envisage.
“For example, our collective aspiration
should in the first instance be the promotion of inter-modalism which
envisages the connection of all states capitals, seaports, airports,
river ports, mining zones, industries and agricultural belts with
railway lines to complement the existing road infrastructure.”
Emodi explained that the theme of the
lecture, ‘transformation of transport infrastructure: catalyst for socio
economic growth’, reflected the importance of good transport system to
the development of a nation.
