Group blames fear for increasing breast cancer
October 16, 2013 by Sodiq Oyeleke
The
founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pink Pearl, Mrs. Orode
Ryan-Okpu, has said that women refuse to do breast cancer screening
because of the fear that the test might be positive.
“This has subsequently been responsible for increase in breast cancer incidents in the country,” she noted.
She said this during a free breast
cancer exercise, tagged ‘Pink Ride Lagos,’ held in Lekki and Ikeja areas
of Lagos on Saturday.
She explained that the group provided free breast screening for many people because of the high cost of treating breast cancer.
She said, “Many people out there still
do not go for free check-up just because of fear. I have worked with a
lot of women for long and the only thing I keep getting is fear. They
don’t want people to know their problems.
“I understand that people feel
reluctant, which is fear, really; that is why we keep creating the
awareness in order to make it easier for people to come out. When people
know more about breast cancer, they will be willing to undergo the
test.”
She urged the government not to relent in its efforts to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in Nigeria.
