October 24, 2013 by Sodiq Oyeleke
No fewer than 150 elderly people in Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Lagos engaged in a fitness walk on Tuesday.
Project Director, COWAP Foundation, Esan Olusola, said the programme was aimed at enlightening the elderly on health issues.
He said, “Since the introduction of this
initiative in 2011 by the organisation, it has assisted the elderly in
the community in maintaining a balanced body fitness and overcome the
worry of inactivity among others.”
President of Festac Town Resident Association, Mr. Jola Ogunlusi, said the exercise was a natural medication for older people.
He said, “We started 2011 and since then
it has been improving. Today, we have about 150 elders for the
exercise. We are embarking on this walk to raise awareness on the need
and benefit of exercise to the elderly which is a natural medication for
long life.”
A health expert, Darlington Ajitenisan,
said, “When you don’t do exercise and you are exposed to certain
ecological factors, it will amount to great disadvantage.
“As elderly, they must be careful of the kind of food they eat. It goes a long way to elongate their life span.”
