Monarch raises alarm over possible epidemic in N’Delta
The
Akasoba of Kalabari, Queen Akasoba Duke-Abiola has foreseen that hunger
would spread “uncontrollably” among people of Niger Delta if the eco
system of the region was not properly maintained.
Duke-Abiola, who is also the chairperson
for the Akasoba Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, in a
statement on Monday, lamented that frequent oil spillage was
unfavourable for the indigenes.
The queen of Kalabari – a tribe of the
Ijaw people living in the western Niger Delta region-blamed negligence
of political leaders and major oil companies for the challenges being
faced by the people of the zone.
She said, “Our situation can be likened
to undecipherable diseases being suffered by the people due to the lack
of humanitarian oil exploratory activities of some oil majors as well as
the unquantifiable illegal activities going on in the Nigerian waters?
There is little or no corporate responsibility on the part of the oil
majors.
“A hunger- epidemic may soon engulf the
Niger Delta region by the relentless oil spillage, gas flaring, wanton
and unwarranted destruction of the eco system, the flora, fauna and the
people’s ways of life. The conflict is not abating rather it is
exacerbating despite the present Nigerian political configuration that
had made a Niger-Deltan the President and Commander in Chief.”
