Timely and reliable intelligence are critical in the national drive to stem the spate of domestic terrorism in parts of the country.
This observation was made by Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed in Share, Headquarters of Ifelodun local government area of the State during the foundation laying of the Police Intelligence Institute, just as the state government donated N200m to the construction of the institute.
According to the Governor, many high-profile crimes and other acts of criminality remain unresolved due to unreliable intelligence gathering.
“Citizens intelligence gathering is a potent source of information for the prevention and detection of crime as those who perpetrate acts of criminality often live in our neighbourhoods," the governor observed.
He, therefore, urged the police to earn the confidence of Nigerians who may be afraid of their safety if they avail the police vital information about crimes as only when the interface between the police and the public was based on trust would the critical citizens’ intelligence be more forthcoming.
The Governor said his administration has released N50million as the first tranche of the N200million it earmarked as the state’s contribution to the construction of the Police Intelligence Institute, while another tranche of N50million was ready for the project.
He expressed the hope that the institute will significantly reassure Nigerians about the capacity of the police to combat crimes of all forms.
The Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar in his remarks said "without a thriving intelligence capacity the police cannot achieve its constitutional mandate of protecting property and lives of the people and that the establishment of the Police Intelligence Institute in Share will expose police personnel to international best practices."
IGP expressed optimism that the institute will also “serve as a catalyst to inter-agency cooperation, engender peer review and above all strengthen the pathways to the restoration of the lost primacy of the intelligence Arm of the force”.
The Inspector General of Police commended the Kwara State Government for making an expanse of land and financial assistance available for the take-off of the project.
