CITN targets manpower development, plans tax academy
The
newly elected President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of
Nigeria, Mr. Mark Dike, has set a six-point agenda to transform the tax
system in the country.
Dike, who emerged as the 11th president
of the CITN recently, said the agenda would bring a new approach to the
execution of the mandates of the institute.
He said the two-year tenure would afford
him the opportunity of helping to transform the country’s tax system by
pushing for the development of technical and research capacity;
restructuring of the secretariat and manpower development; and
acceleration of the process for the establishment of a tax academy in
the country.
Other items on his agenda are:
instilling a culture of greater accountability in activities and
processes; strengthening national and international outreach activities;
and sustaining activities of the national body and district societies.
On the establishment of a manpower
development and tax academy for the country, Dike said, “To this end, we
will make sure that the critical area is accorded priority through a
deliberate policy of right staffing, process reformation, training and
retraining, improved remuneration and motivation.
“The tax academy is an avenue to develop
human capacity needs of the taxation profession in Nigeria. This has
largely been on the drawing board, with funding posing a huge challenge
in actualising the vision. Despite this challenge, we will accelerate
the process of establishing the academy in view of the enormous benefits
derivable from the project.”
The Country Director, Crown Agent
Nigeria Limited, who was the guest speaker at the event, Dr. Mark Abani,
urged tax collectors and agencies to ensure proper enlightenment of the
taxpayers.
“A clear understanding of the
behavioural drivers of the taxpayers is the key to changing attitudes
and increasing compliance. The importance of increasing taxpayer
education to improve compliance cannot be overstated as the level of
education given influences taxpayer behaviour,” he added.
