‘Women empowerment will reduce crime’
A
former Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State, Chief Lanre Razak
has said empowering women would help to reduce crime in the country.
He said this while empowering 70 women with N20, 000 each in Epe, Lagos.
According
to him, it is important for government and well meaning Nigerians to
empower women due to their role in the family and community.
He
said, “It is the duty of all Nigerians to assist women as a way of
helping the family unit. Given the high crime rate in the society,
assisting women can be an avenue to reducing vices, in view of their
unique role in the family.
“If the women are well assisted, they
will thrive in their vocations and this will help them to train their
children in the best way and manner that will help the society against
crime and other social vices.”
The Action Congress of Nigeria
chieftain urged the women not to look down on themselves, saying they
still remained a strong pillar in the society.
“As women you
have no reason to feel inferior, strive for the top in your chosen
careers. Emulate women of honour and courage who have drawn national
importance to themselves through their contributions to national
development,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Association of
Nigeria urged the Federal Government not to relent in securing a cease
fire agreement with the Boko Haram sect.
President of the
association, Alhaji Yusuf Sulayman, said this in a statement ahead of
the group's 10th National Ramadan Public Lecture on Sunday.
He
said, "“Our nation has suffered human and material losses as a result of
the crisis. We believe that the ceasefire is a welcome development
which will bring peace and stability to the troubled region as business
activities that were paralysed will resume and those displaced will
return to their homes while investors’ confidence would be boosted.”
