LG boss makes case for vocational education
The Chairman, Apapa Local Government, Lagos State, Mr. Ayodeji Joseph, has urged Nigerians to support vocational education for the country to grow.
Joseph gave the advice during the inauguration of Apapa Skills Acquisition Centre on Thursday in Lagos.
He explained that the centre was constructed to empower school leavers in the community, stressing that it was important to encourage youths without the capacity for formal education.
He said, “When we promised that education is the area we would love to be most remembered for, we were not oblivious of the fact that education has a broad spectrum and it is not only restricted to formal classroom.
“The concept of 6-3-3-4 system of education is premised on the fact that while some learners may be very versatile in academics, others will have flair for vocational or non formal education.
“Therefore, if about 60 per cent of learners in our schools are academic oriented, it will be unfair to neglect the remaining 40 per cent that is not. It is this vacuum between formal and informal types of education that we decided to fill in constructing the centre.
We believe that both formal and non-formal educational sectors must complement each other.”
The chairman, while urging the trainees to maximise the opportunity offered to them, said adequate measures had been put in place against project neglect.
