Group seeks Aregbesola’s intervention in Osun stool
The Concerned Orile Owu Elites has urged the Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, to intervene in the selection of candidate for the stool of Orile–Owu in the state.
The group said this in a statement by its Co-ordinator, Dr. Isaac Aderibigbe; Public Relations/Protocol Officer, Mr. Ilori Olusakin; Mr. Wahab Akinola; and Mr. Yinka Adegunju, on Thursday.
The post was headed by the late Olowu of Orile-Owu and Vice Chairman, Osun State Council of Obas, Oba Moses Adejobi, JP Afelele II, before he died in an auto crash on March 15, 2011.
The group said, “The Osun State Government should carry out thorough screening on the candidates considered or selected for consideration by the Governor in the last meeting at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy in Osogbo.
“These considerations should be based on academic status, acceptability by the populace, charisma, efficiency and productivity, exposure that will be beneficial to the government and his people, presentable values, connection or link with royal blood-as many of them have diluted royal blood.”
It stated that the state government should devise means that would ensure the best candidate was chosen, noting that rotational systems would not promote the tradition of the ancient city.
It added, “It is also not a strange scenario to have a son becoming an Oba after his father’s death. This has occurred in several towns in Yorubaland, even in Osun State. We are interested in having a young, vibrant and productive Oba, not a retrogressive one.
“It is not out of point to state that no one should be allowed to desecrate the Owu culture for the necessary traditional steps taken or consultations made have resulted in a clear and fair selection; please be guided.”
