Police chaplain shoots Keke NAPEP operator in Lagos
by Eniola Akinkuotu
Lagos State Police Chaplain, Mr. Moses Adekola, allegedly shot a rickshaw operator during an argument in Ikeja area of Lagos on Monday.
Adekola, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, is being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.
An eyewitness said the chaplain was driving on Monday evening but on reaching Medical Road, there was a traffic snarl reportedly caused by Keke NAPEP operators.
Adekola was said to have alighted from his car and asked one of the operators to leave the road, a development that reportedly resulted in an argument.
As the argument escalated, the ASP reportedly pulled his gun to scare off the errant operators.
The rickshaw operator, who allegedly caused the traffic jam was said to have fled the scene on sighting the gun.
The chaplain was said to have chased him to Obada junction, around Anifowose, where he allegedly shot him.
The shooting was said to have triggered a protest with an angry mob attacking the police officer.
He was said to have been disarmed by the crowd who attempted to lynch him.
Adekola was however lucky as some policemen raced to the scene to rescue him.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, said she was not aware of the development.
However, a source at the Homicide Section of the SCID confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.
The source said, “It’s true; Adekola was brought to D4 section on Tuesday evening. He shot a Keke NAPEP operator but the person did not die. Investigations are ongoing."
