"Over population, low funding bane of educational development"

July 20, 2012 by Sodiq Oyeleke

The Proprietor, Doregos Private Academy, Lagos, Mrs. Clementina Doregos, has decried over population in public schools and poor funding of education in Nigeria.

Doregos, who spoke at the 18th Valedictory Service of the school and the inauguration of her biography, said government must defend the right of children to quality education.

She said, “Considering the public schools especially, there are too many children and the quality might not be there much because when the pupils are many without a corresponding manpower, there will be a loss of value.”

She advocated that more funds should be allocated to the educational sector, saying this would enhance development.

“Developing education in the country can take half of the budget of Nigeria if we really want it to grow. Education is still under-funded in the country,” she said.

Also, the school acting Principal, Mr. Oluyemi Faleke, urged the graduating pupils to cultivate the heritage of excellence and diligence.

She lamented that the society now does not recognise hard work and accountability.

She added, “Fraudulent and sharp practices, bribery and corruption are the order of the day. It is sad to note that the society is gradually losing grip of its positive core values. The value system has changed completely with the young ones placing emphasis as how ‘smart’ one is or can be.”
