‘Investment in teachers will improve standard’

The Headmistress of Kingdom Heritage Model School, Acme Road, Ogba, Lagos, Mrs. Olabisi Aderonmu, has said that investment in teachers will improve educational system in the country.
Aderonmu, who spoke at the 2012 inter-house sports competitions of the school on Saturday, urged government and private school owners to build the capacity of their teachers through training and improved welfare packages.
She said, “Teachers are builders and they also mould the future of the pupils. It is only a teacher that has been encouraged with good working conditions that will impart adequate knowledge in the pupils. If we invest in our teachers we are indirectly investing in the pupils.’’
Aderonmu added that teachers were the hope of the future and the only ones that could help a child to develop in a proper way.
“We must understand that the key to the success of any child is in the hands of the teachers. They are the only ones that can unlock the problem associated with illiteracy in the country,” she said.
She urged teachers to pursue self-development especially in the area of ICT and to also uphold their professional responsibilities to their pupils.
Aderonmu said, “Teachers must always be intrinsically motivated, they must not depend on the extrinsic values. This does not mean they should not be properly paid, but the future of a child should be their major concern. They must realise that without them, the future of the children is not certain.”
She, however, noted that apart from teachers, pupils should be encouraged to broaden their knowledge on various facets of life.
“There must be a maximum investment on both the children and teachers. Government and parents should do everything within their capacity to invest and provide means that will enhance development in education,” she said.
At the end of the competition, Yellow House came first while Green House clinched the second position. Red House came third while Blue House finished fourth.
Commenting on the performance of the pupils, Aderonmu urged schools to encourage extra curricular activities to enhance the physical development of their pupils outside the classrooms.
