The group made the call at the AKIDI annual day celebration and public lecture, held in Lagos on Sunday. The theme of the lecture is: “Significance of effective youth self-reliance in a developing economy: case of Nigeria.” “Youths should refocus their ideologies and academic excellence into things that will bring glory to Nigeria and promote the peaceful co-existence of the country,” President of AKIDI, Mr. Ubong Etuk, said. He said a nation could only develop when its youths were well empowered and self-reliant. The Managing Editor of Daily Independent newspaper, Mr. Akpandem James, said education was a tool for youth development, adding that government should implement policy to help the youth grow. He advised the youth not to be over-ambitious, have a good orientation and find an operative environment. The General Manager, Teledom Group Limited, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwen, also said the government should be held responsible for youths’ incapacity and dependency. Ekuwen noted that government had failed in developing the youth, adding that this had made many of them to be dependent. “Youths have to be equipped and empowered with proper training for them to impact the society the way it is expected,” he said. |
