Parents, students lament over OAU Post-UME fee

Prospective students and parents of the Obafemi awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have expressed their dissatisfaction over the cost of the Post Unified Tetiary Matriculation Examination organised by the school.

Our correspondent learnt that the students paid N5,750 for the post-UTME, both for the registration and for the result checker.

Ac cording to a parent, who identified himself as Mr. Amodu, the post UTME fee was against the instruction of the Federal Government.

He said, “I dont even know who is more powerful between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Universities. I see no reason why we should be paying this much for an exam which does not assure of success.

“Infact, if you calculate the post-UTMe fee it is even more than the admission fee itself. This is because the school has made things difficult for we the parents. I wonder why we have decided to  ring our children to a Federal school and we will still have to pay much.”

Another parent, who pleaded anonymity for the fear of her child denial of admission, said this will discourage many parents to sponsor their children to school, adding that the school is going against the philosophy the person it was named after.

She added, “Education should not be something that should be this expensive. They must realise that this will not help the country to grow, because many will be discouraged to go to school.

“I am sure this was not in line with the late Obafemi awolowo whom the school was named after. Awolowo championed free and affordable education and today his name is misinterpreted. Education is not something the government should believe will bring sudden profit.”

A prospective student of the school, who identified herself as Itunu, decried that they did not expect to pay up to this.

She wondered why they will have to pay to chect the result after paying for the registration.

She said, “After paying N2,350 for the registration, we have to pay another N3,350 for checking our result again. How do they want us to further our education.

“To me, it is a wicked act we are just placed under undue pressure because we want to study. Infact, i am getting discouraged to study because this is getting beyond my capacity. The must consider that everyone is not born with a silver spoon.”

Also, Olamide, who also wrote the post UTME examination lamented that the fee will put alot of students at distress.

“I am sure many of us will not be able to afford the fee. This is unfavorable to us, because it seems that they are using this medium to make money obviously, because i know the cost price or the exercise can never be up to the amount we paid,” he said.
