At part-two class award, SDK unveils achievements within two months

...warns against disunity

BEING THE SPEECH DELIVERED BY SODIQ OYELEKE, PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENTS OF ENGLISH AND LITERARY STUDIES, OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE, OSUN STATE AT 2013/2014 SET CLASS AWARD ON FRIDAY, JULY 10 2015.

Protocols.

It is indeed my pleasure to address this set of students, whose impact cannot be underestimated in both the political, social and academic serene of NASELS in an occasion that served as a litmus test for their progress or retrogression. I, on behalf of other executives, use this opportunity to appreciate your roles in the controversial election that brought in the Eximius Ictum 2015 Executive.

By now, those who saw the vision of NASELS growing through us and were ready to ensure we emerge, despite the politicking, propaganda and misinterpretation of constitution now look like octopus, whose prediction will hardly be false. For those who are not yet convinced or aware of the speedy transformation NASELS had gone through, here are some of the projects and programmes our two-month-old executive cabinet has achieved:

  • Opening of a Corporate Current Account with United Bank for Africa (UBA)
  • Establishing a Web presence
  • Facelift of the Secretariat – painting, rugging, cottoning, replacement of chairs and table
  • University Tour for part one students to Museum and Zoo
  • Easy Public Address System procurement for Part One Students
  • Collaboration with Faculty - Supervision of Gown Collection during matriculation (420 gowns were secured through the association – highest so far in history). The association now get official correspondences notifying it of faculty programmes for students
  • Distribution of Past Question as packages
  • Free Course Registration for Naselsites who have paid their annual dues
  • Repair of NASELS  photocopier Machine, computer and UPS
  • Repair of board displaying Department of English at lobby
  • Procurement of Cubicle and repair of book shelve
  • Production of Fount Magazine, which was last produced since 2011 edition
  • Initiation of renewal process with university management under the Department of Students Affair
  • Purchase of a brand new Projector for the association
  • Organisation of NASELS Ultimate Search, which is first of its kind on OAU campus. Final was held on OAU mountain. (Fan, hot plates among others given to winners)
  • NASELS Debate Team – Winners rewarded with books and award plaques
  • Advancement in sporting activities – Use of Mainbowl, track event and projection of play station game, purchase of sporting equipment
  • Scholarship to be given to best debater in the department
  • Career Talk with a foreigner (from South-Africa) as Guest Speaker. One of the media advisers to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was the co-speaker
  • Media Trip to Punch and Television Continental in Lagos with certificate
  • Outstanding Freshmen Week at a cheaper rate compared to last two administrations despite increase in admitted students
  • Tutorials with over 200 students in attendance
  • Establishment of contact base of Alumni
  • Strengthening inter-university relationship - Visitation to and by students from Adeleke University Ede
  • Increase in political relevance in the university politics – Select committee, judicial committee, welfare committee among others
  • Close completion of NASELS HALF Hour radio programme on Great FM
  • Among others
I will not fail to speak briefly on some germane issues currently rocking NASELS and address tacitly some of the complaints that the executives have got so far.

DISUNITY AND NEXT NASELS ELECTION

Recall that I earlier said this award programme is a Litmus Test for the status of this class. This is because it will show and tell what may be of the class after the losers and winners know themselves. The experience will surely vary, but I urge all nominees not to take this as completely who they represent. I know people who won class awards but lost NASELS election in my own set. It is not about being the best in NASELS or OAU but in life.
I nurse the fear that your class may completely be disunited if extreme care is not taken. I am scared that the best candidate may not emerge based on the politics that has fallen on the left side of the class acidic leadership test. I won't like to comment further on this since we are not in a political gathering but sometimes, consensus does it; it's a part of democracy. You may also give fair chance to all to test their strength, if you deem it fit.

Be wise in the method of selecting who to represent your class as the leader of NASELS. Please ignore all that must have occurred during the last election both in terms of religion and ideology, be united again and speak one voice. Make a difference by clinching the top through a united move.

IS IT ALL ABOUT PROJECT?

No, it is not all about project but compulsorily development and growth. It is about the advancement of the association, which is the entity that brought us together. It took us so much plans, pains and sacrifices to give NASELS the structure (both administrative and physical) that it is currently enjoying. The change is sudden and we plead with everyone to abide by the protocols that have been put in place.

The truth of the matter is that majority of those that constitute the current leadership of NASELS are from a humble background/family, including myself. Apart from that, some of us have also decided to maintain a simple lifestyle but neatly dressed, similar to the socialites. Sorry if you don't find us on suit always.  Despite our background, we are disciplined and have not and will not touch NASELS fund for anything. In most cases, we did the engineering work, carpenting, painting and so on ourselves. Special thanks to members of this class who have always been of help. In fact, you will be surprised to know how much is currently in NASELS treasury.

OUR PAINS

Majority of members in this class have not paid their due and this is instrumental to getting the association functioning. It is saddening that a class with so many active members has less than 100 people that have paid their dues. This doesn't pose a good signal of commitment from the class to the association.

I sincerely appeal to stakeholders and members of the class in general to ensure the payment of due. Poor turnouts in payment will also affect the treasury that will be left for members of your class that will be taking over the leadership mantle come next session.

CONCLUSION:
I really commend the organisers of this award programme, as I can see a lot of improvement in the programme which was first organised by the 2012 Set with Akinlolu Akinsola, the current Director of Socials as the pioneer. Thank you all for coming and listening to me. I appreciate you for inviting me and other members of the executive council. We are glad to be one of you here today.
