Birth spacing, key to child survival —Nutritionist

The
Regional Business Head, Nestlé Nutrition Sub Saharan Africa, Ms.
Pindelwa Mda, has lamented that many children in Africa die due to
inadequate birth spacing and improper feeding.
She noted that many mothers did not understand the importance of child spacing to recuperation after child birth.
Mda said this during a facility tour of Nestlé nutrition team to one of its offices at Agbara, Ogun Sttae, on Tuesday.
According to her, the best way of
achieving infants’ survival in the sub Saharan region is by adopting the
birth spacing and proper feeding during and after delivery.
She said, “Many women still do not know
that proper birth spacing affects not only the health of their children,
but their own health, too. In fact, it affects the child’s future
growth.”
She warned that, biologically, women are not designed to have babies in close succession.
“This is as a result of the fact that
nursing mothers will typically not be fertile for at least six months
postpartum; so, I advise that bigger gap should be given between
siblings.”
