Pay our allowances, amnesty leaders tell FG
Some
ex-militants who are part of the third phase of amnesty programme in
the Niger Delta have commended the Federal Government for the successful
implementation of the phase.
They, however, they called on the
Federal Government to pay their outstanding allowances and accommodate
those that were not documented during the exercise.
The calls were contained in a
statement on Monday by the third phase leaders, ‘Generals’ Ebi John,
Izonpere Joel and Oyinkuro Erebo.
They also commended the Chairman of the
Presidential Amnesty Programme, Kingsley Kuku; the Head of
Documentation, Air Marshall James Gbum; the State Security Service; the
Joint Military Taskforce and the police for making the exercise a
success.
Specifically, John said their
disposition to broker peace in the Niger Delta through the
implementation of the TPA would ensure a lasting peace in the
geo-political zone.
He lauded the government for addressing
the challenges in the region such as exploration and exploitation
activities, degradation of the environment and neglect of the region.
He said, “May I also call on the Federal
Government through Kuku to provide more slots to accommodate those that
were not documented during the last exercise.
“This is because they were duly disarmed
and it will be a step in the right direction if they are included in
the scheme. I also urge the amnesty office to expedite the process of
ensuring that the third phase beneficiaries are paid their
demobilisation/disarmament fees and house allowances paid to
beneficiaries of earlier phases.”
Joel said as a camp leader, it was disheartening that he was being treated as a follower.
“We also passed through the same process of disarmament as leaders and followers of other phases,” he said.
On his part, Erebo stressed the need for the amnesty office to effectively communicate with leaders of the third phase.
He added that not involving them in decision-making was capable of causing tension and chaos.
