Oldest Identical Centenarian Twin in Africa Dies at 100

One of the centenarian twins, who celebrated their 100-year birthday on Saturday, March 16, Mrs Emily Kehinde Olukoga-Ogunde has passed on.

In a statement by her only child, Mr Kunle Olukoga, the centenarian bade the world farewell on Thursday 5th September, 2013 at around 9am while having a nap, after her breakfast.

The twins were born on March 13, 1913 at Okun Owa, Ijebu, Ogun State.

She is survived by her son, grand children, great grand children and her twin sister, Mrs Esther Taiwo Olukoya, who has remained inconsolable after the news was broken to her.

Mrs Esther Taiwo Olukoya and Mrs Emily Kehinde Olukoga-Ogunde, who looked almost identical are probably the third set of twins in the world to hit the century age and perhaps the first in Africa.

Mrs Esther Taiwo Olukoya and late Mrs Emily Kehinde Olukoga-Ogunde celebrated their centenary birthday at their country home in Okun-Owa.

The twins are sisters of the late traditional ruler, Oba Aderibigbe Martins, the Olugbani of Okun Owa and both were choristers at Saint Barnabas Church, Okun Owa.

They were traders, but Kehinde, one of the wives of late Chief Hubert Ogunde, also assisted the husband in the theatre business working in the background.

According to the statement, funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Lamenting the loss of the centenary twin, the statement read: "At the holy communion service conducted by Venerable Oguntoye, who was so enthusiastic that for the first time in his 30 years of evangelical work he was conducting a birthday for centenarian twins, the twins displayed their singing prowess and caused their guests to burst into a frenetic explosion of joy.

“Guinness Book of World Records stated in their entry that the first set of twins to clock 100 years are Edith Ritchie and Evelyn Middleton from Aberdeenshire in Scotland.

Now 103 years, they are 39 days older than the second oldest twins in the world but first identical twins in the universe - Mrs Charlotte Eisgrou and Mrs Ann Primarck, who were born when King Edward V11 was still on the British throne."

The statement also appreciated the support given to the twins saying: "The Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, visited them two days after the birthday celebration. He honoured them and presented them with gifts and ensured that the Ministry of Women Affairs in Ogun State, visited them regularly to monitor their welfare.”
