Latin America elected as Pope
Cardinals in the Vatican City have elected a new Pope as white smoke emerged from the chimney on Wednesday night.
The new Pope for the 1.2 billion-member Catholic Church is Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina. He becomes the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church.
He has chosen to be called Pope Francis de 1st.
The 115 cardinals held a first inconclusive vote in the Sistine Chapel on
Tuesday as they began the process of finding a successor to Benedict XVI, who
brought a troubled eight-year papacy to an abrupt end by resigning last month
aged 85.
Morning smoke at around 11.30am Italian time (10.30am GMT) on Wednesday was
black - signalling that the second vote had again produced no two thirds
majority for any one candidate.
The evening smoke at around 7pm local time (6pm GMT) showed white smoke meaning that a new pope has ben elected.
