Only balanced education can solve Nigeria’s challenges – Don
He gave the advice during the 9th Academic Counselling Seminar organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, University of Lagos Branch in Lagos.
The theme of the seminar attended by students and educationists was “Balanced education, an agenda for Nigeria.”
Noibi, who described balanced education as arrangement that accommodates both western and religious and civic teachings, blamed the country’s educational system for its challenges.
He said, “Everywhere in the world, people want to learn English language but in the west, we need to have a balanced education that consists of both western and religious teachings. This will enable the students learn with their heart and head.
“The country has leadership challenges because of our system of education. When the education is faulty, the leaders will also be faulty. Give Nigeria a balanced education and there will be balanced leaders.”
According to him, there is high rate of corruption in the country as a result of lack of curriculum that promotes good morals in schools.
He said, “We must trace knowledge back to its root. Religious education should be made compulsory at all levels up to the higher institutions. Whether the students are Christians or Muslims, there should a provision for them just like they learn English and other subjects throughout their education career.”
“This will imbibe the fear of God in them. There will be stoppage to the systematic use of public offices for private benefits if we diversify our educational system to include moral education that may not necessarily be based on faith.”
He however urged the students to avoid indecent dressing, exam malpractices, falsification of results and seeking undue favour from lecturers.
The President, MSSN, UNILAG, Musodiq Faruq, explained that the seminar was to proffer solutions that would improve the educational system in the country.
He said, “It is a way of providing lasting solutions to the quack system and standard of education in Nigeria. We aim at using it to reshape the educational system and also empower outstanding students with scholarships.”
