The Medical Director, Pfizer, Dr. Kodjo Soroh has
emphasised you need for people to embark
on a regular cardiovascular health test to prevent test prevent stroke, saying
that it was the cause of death and disability in the country.
In medical term,
cardiovascular refers to a number of disease conditions that involve the
heart and blood vessels.
The expert during a pesentation to create awareness on stroke
organised by the Pfizer on Thursday in Lagos said many people dont recognise
therelationship between lifestyle and blood pressure.
Quoting the World Health Organisation analysis, the expert
said many Nigerians have lost their lives before their expentacy rate because
of stroke.
Soroh said, “Cardiovascular Disease is the leading Cause of
death and disability, an estimated 37 million people worldwide suffer a
cardiovascular event. In Western countries CVD accounts for nearly1 in every 3
deaths. Nearly 20 million worldwide survive a heart attack or stroke, but many
require costly, long term medical care after the event.”
“Life Expectancy as predicted is 43.3 years from 52 years.By
2015, 70% of women and 75% of men above 30 years will be obese as a result of
the Cardiovascular Disease.it is commonly one of the cause High blood pressure
(hypertension), angina, heart attack (myocardial infarction), Congestive heart
failure, stroke, Pripheral Vascular Disease.”
The expert added that two major players in the development
of CVD are high blood pressure and high cholesterol, describing the disease as
‘a silent killer without any symptoms that causes progressive and severe damage
to the circulatory system over time.
She stressed that many people have high blood pressure for
years without knowing it.
“Most of the time, there are no symptoms, but when high
blood pressure goes untreated, it damages arteries and vital organs throughout
the body.
Globally, 7 million die every year and 1.5 billion people
worldwide suffer because of high blood pressure or hypertension. It is the
biggest single risk factor for death world wide causing heart disease, stroke
and kidney disease and diabetes,” she said.
She proffered that patients should regularly consult their
doctors, noting that as a way to treat the disease.
She added, “Most hypertensive patients require drug
treatment. Treating hypertension with drugs prevents heart attacks and strokes.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider for individualized care. And then,
remember to take your medications regularly as instructed by your physician,
report any side effects to your physician immediately Continue to monitor blood
pressure while on medication, be careful about drug interactions and consult
with your physician.”
