Construction firm canvasses support for indigenous companies

Construction firm canvasses support for indigenous companies

A building and civil engineering company, Construction Kaiser Limited, has expressed dissatisfaction with the inability of local construction firms to exist for long.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Construction Kaiser, Mr. Igbuan Okaisabor, expressed the dissatisfaction during the company’s 20th anniversary held in Lagos.

He noted that the anniversary was to celebrate the company’s existence despite the numerous challenges being faced by indigenous companies in the country.

Okaisabor said, “As research has shown, entrepreneurship is very challenging, only 20 per cent of start-ups make it past the fifth year in the Western world; yet here, we are celebrating our 20th anniversary in an environment that is very challenging to do business for various reasons you can identify with.

“I wonder why Nigerians cannot establish and grow construction companies that can work to high standards, and indeed, at a lower price, since we can eliminate the overheads associated with keeping expatriates in Nigeria.”

He, however, advised constructors to invest in staff training and acquire equipment for quality job delivery.
“We believe that 80 per cent of success in business is brought about by relationships, while 20 per cent is attributable to product knowledge. We have invested heavily in equipment and training of personnel. Nigeria is a typical emerging market characterised by scarcity of well-trained people, especially in middle management,” he added.
While giving tips that sustained the company, Okaisabor said, “This has been made worse by little or no investment in the country’s educational sector over the last 30 years. Recognising this, we have embarked on local and international training of our engineers and management to continuously improve our project delivery.”

The keynote address speaker, Mr. K. Adeola, blamed the lack of financial support for the non-sustainability of the local companies.

Adeola, who spoke on ‘The emergence of indigenous construction companies in Nigeria – Challenges and prospects’, explained that engineers had limited opportunities to work in their fields due to the absence of construction companies that could employ them.

He said, “There are thousands of engineers and most of them are working in other sectors because they have limited opportunities in the fields they are trained in. We need to boost engineers in the small scale enterprise. There is inadequate capacity building and banks are not willing to help local contractors.

“The patronage policy does not allow local contractors to get work. They are struggling against all odds. Also, the procurement policy is hugely against local constructors. Access to capital is another problem. Construction business involves huge capital, which a local contractor is not likely to have; access to finance is a great barrier to local contractors.”

Other experts who spoke at the events were the Dean, Lagos Business School, Dr. Enase Okonedo; Managing Director, Interkel Group, Mr. Nnamdi Agbim; President, Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Mr. Agele Alufohai; Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mr. Ernest Nwapa; and Mr. Massimo De Luca of the European Union delegation.

NEPC trains exporters for ECOWAS trade fair

NEPC trains exporters for ECOWAS trade fair

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council says it has trained exporters in the country on the modalities of exhibition ahead of the 7th ECOWAS Trade Fair in Ghana.

The one-day trade show preparation workshop was organised by the council in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development and Nigeria Expanded Trade and Transport, in Lagos on Thursday.

NEPC Acting Executive Director, Mr. Aliyu Lawal, said the training was important to ensure that Nigerian exporters achieved their purpose for participating in the exhibition.

Aliyu, who was represented by the Deputy Director, NEPC Marketing Development, Mr. Mathew Iranloye, said, “The purpose of this programme is to equip and train participating exporters at the 7th ECOWAS trade fair scheduled to hold in Accra on how to maximise the benefit of attending trade shows.
“International trade rules are dynamic and constantly changing and it is important for the wary exporter to continually find ways of developing himself to be able to stay abreast of developments in the sector.
“Trade shows can be great tools for marketing development. However, without proper planning and follow-up a tradeshow has little measurable return on investment.”
Acting Zonal Controller, NEPC, Lagos, Mrs. Evelyn Obidike, added that the best way for companies to succeed in export business is to have a carefully designed and competently managed exporting programme such as an international trade fair.

150 walk for fitness

No fewer  than 150 elderly people  in Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Lagos  engaged in a  fitness walk on Tuesday.
Project Director, COWAP Foundation, Esan Olusola, said the programme was aimed at  enlightening  the elderly on health issues.
He said, “Since the introduction of this initiative in 2011 by the organisation, it has assisted the  elderly in the community in maintaining a balanced body fitness and overcome the worry of inactivity among others.”
President of Festac Town Resident Association, Mr. Jola Ogunlusi, said the  exercise was a natural medication for  older people.
He said, “We started 2011 and since then it has been improving. Today, we have about 150 elders for the exercise.  We are embarking on this walk to raise awareness on the need and benefit of exercise to the elderly which is a natural medication for long life.”
A health expert, Darlington Ajitenisan, said, “When you don’t do exercise and you are exposed to certain ecological factors, it will amount to great disadvantage.
“As elderly, they must be careful of the kind of food they eat. It goes a long way to elongate their life span.”

Kanu tips Eagles, Eaglets

Former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu  has tipped the Super Eagles to beat Ethiopia in their  return leg 2014 World Cup playoff in Calabar on November 16  to land in Brazil for the tournament.

Kanu  also tipped the Golden  Eaglets to win the ongoing FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games gold medallist, who  spoke at the Kanu Heart Foundation’s ‘Heal-a-Heart’ lottery draw in Lagos on Wednesday, urged Nigerians to support the two national  teams.

He said, “I always say that we have a good team (Super Eagles), we have a good coach (Stephen Keshi)
and we have to believe in them because that gives them confidence to go there and do it for us.

“If they could beat  Ethiopia on  a bad pitch in Addis Ababa,  then they can do it here (in Nigeria).  The most important thing at this stage is to get the result.  It  does not matter how we play. We want to be in Brazil.

“We have done that away (Ethiopia), coming down to Nigeria here, we have to make sure that we finish  the job.  We must be focused and that is important.

“We  have a good team at UAE 2013  and they must try to win. They played like champions, for them to come back and equalise the game against Sweden and we should praise them for their efforts.

“For me,   they have done well so far. If they put in more effort I am very sure they will win the cup. Moreover, we have good  players there.”

Birth spacing, key to child survival —Nutritionist

Birth spacing, key to child survival —Nutritionist

The Regional Business Head, Nestlé Nutrition Sub Saharan Africa, Ms. Pindelwa Mda, has lamented that many children in Africa die due to inadequate birth spacing and improper feeding.

She noted that many mothers did not understand the importance of child spacing to recuperation after child birth.

Mda said this during a facility tour of Nestlé nutrition team to one of its offices at Agbara, Ogun Sttae, on Tuesday.

According to her, the best way of achieving infants’ survival in the sub Saharan region is by adopting the birth spacing and proper feeding during and after delivery.

She said, “Many women still do not know that proper birth spacing affects not only the health of their children, but their own health, too. In fact, it affects the child’s future growth.”

She warned that, biologically, women are not designed to have babies in close succession.

“This is as a result of the fact that nursing mothers will typically not be fertile for at least six months postpartum; so, I advise that bigger gap should be given between siblings.”

Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Public Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina

People are underutilising PHCs — Adeshina

The Special Adviser on Health to Governor Babatunde Fashola, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, has expressed concern over the way people neglect the use of primary health centres.
Adeshina who said this at a briefing on Friday, also urged Lagosians to get referrals from a primary health centre before proceeding to any general hospital in the state.
She said, “It is when PHCs cannot handle a case that they refer the patient to secondary hospital such as the general hospital.
“General hospitals are not built for immunisation and other minor cases.”
According to her, the flagship centres are established by the state government to ensure quality delivery of services in the PHCs.
She also explained that the state government had established and equipped the centres in order to reduce the population of patients who consult with doctors in the general hospitals.
She added, “We had to come up with a revitalisation process for the primary health care system, which led to the development of a template that is now being used as a yardstick in our PHCs.
“The revitalisation programme is essentially to create a 24-hour power supply for health care service within the 57 local governments and council development areas. We will eventually have 57 comprehensive, 24-hour running PHCs. We named them the flagship centres because of the excellence and improvement expected of them.”

Group blames fear for increasing breast cancer

Group blames fear for increasing breast cancer

The founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pink Pearl, Mrs. Orode Ryan-Okpu, has said that women refuse to do breast cancer screening because of the fear that the test might be positive.
“This has subsequently been responsible for increase in breast cancer incidents in the country,” she noted.

She said this during a free breast cancer exercise, tagged ‘Pink Ride Lagos,’ held in Lekki and Ikeja areas of Lagos on Saturday.

She explained that the group provided free breast screening for many people because of the high cost of treating breast cancer.

She said, “Many people out there still do not go for free check-up just because of fear. I have worked with a lot of women for long and the only thing I keep getting is fear. They don’t want people to know their problems.

“I understand that people feel reluctant, which is fear, really; that is why we keep creating the awareness in order to make it easier for people to come out. When people know more about breast cancer, they will be willing to undergo the test.”

She urged the government not to relent in its efforts to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in Nigeria.

Vaccination, key to polio-free Nigeria —Rotary boss

Vaccination, key to polio-free Nigeria —Rotary boss

Rotary International has urged members of the public to support government efforts towards eliminating polio, by embracing the polio vaccination, which it described as the surest way to help Nigeria achieve its 2014 total polio eradication goal.
“If achieved, Nigeria will join the league of polio-free countries for children, such as India and America,” an ex-District Governor of Rotary/Chairman, Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, Dr. Tunji Funso, said.
Funso made this call in Lagos during the World Polio Day.
He lamented that while many endemic countries had recorded tremendous success in the fight against polio as far back as 1988, Nigeria, alongside Pakistan and Afghanistan, currently remains the three polio-endemic countries.
He noted that with consistent vaccination, the world would soon be free of polio, just like it did with small pox.
Experts say currently, Nigeria requires one billion dosage of the polio vaccine annually, and Funso disclosed that “the NNPC is striving to raise $500m for the total eradication of the virus in the country.”
Recounting the nation’s success in containing the spread of the virus, Funso said, “As at October 4, 2013, Nigeria had only one confirmed circulating vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV2) in one state, compared to five cases in two states within the same period in 2012. Also, there were 49 cases of confirmed wild polio virus in nine states, compared to 101 cases in 11 states at the same period in 2012.”
He noted that this achievement was possible due to the relentless efforts of the Rotary International in driving the largest public-private partnership in history through advocacy, using its over 1.2 million member-volunteers around the world.
While thanking the partners and donors, Funso said, “While we advocate, raise funds and actively participate in immunising children, our partners — the governments, WHO, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – have been providing financial, technical and human resources to get the job done.”
He enjoined Nigerians to join hands with the rotary and government to ensure the vaccination of every child, saying it is the safest solution to the scourge.

Nestle MD stresses importance of quality water

Nestle MD stresses importance of quality water

Authorities of Nestle Nigeria Plc have warned Nigerians against the consumption of suspicious water, especially the water that is deficient in Zinc.

Managing Director/Chief Executive of Nestle, Mr. Dharnesh Gordon, gave the advice at the public presentation of the Nestle Pure Life Protect in Lagos.

Explaining some of the efforts by the company in making quality water available to Nigerians, Gordon said only clean water would aid healthy living.
He said, “We work to achieve efficiency across our operations by excelling in the reduction of direct water use in all our facilities.
“Also, we advocate effective water policies and stewardship by promoting public policies that place value on water at every level.
“It is important to treat effectively the water being discharged, by setting targets for returning clean water to the environment; and engaging with suppliers, especially those in agriculture, by helping to improve their water management, with focus on impacts at watershed level.”
Gordon said Nestle, as a socially responsible company, “raises awareness about water access and conservation by engaging employees, communities and consumers in the water imperative.”
He recommended putting risk assessments in place to safeguard sources of water against any potential risks.
“We believe strongly that good hydration is at the heart of a healthy lifestyle. We also believe that when it comes to hydration, bottled water is the healthiest packaged beverage, due to its absence of calories, its controlled origin, its outstanding quality, its taste and convenience,” he added.
Country Business Manager of the company, Mr. Adewale Ojo, added that the organisation had carried out proper research before producing the Pure Life Protect water brand.

Anti-corruption protesters want Oduah jailed

Anti-corruption protesters want Oduah jailed

Protesters on Wednesday stormed the Lagos Office of the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission, requesting that the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, be tried and jailed if found guilty.

The protesters, who stormed the ICPC office around 10.15am, defied confrontation by armed policemen who shot thrice into the air and civil defence officers to gain entrance into the premises of the commission.

Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adediran, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, said that many lives had been lost due to corruption in the aviation sector.

He said, “The purchase of the bulletproof cars is outrageous. It is the ICPC that should deal with anything that has to do with official corruption. Their reaction has been that they have not got a petition to act and that  that is why investigation has not begun. Now we have submitted a petition, we want them to act.

“If Oduah is found guilty after the probe, we want her to go to jail; we want anybody found culpable to be prosecuted diligently, we want anybody found guilty to be adequately punished and until we get that we will not rest.

“It is saddening that the President who should set precedence for Nigerians to follow could be shielding the indicted and even include them in his entourage to Israel on holy pilgrimage. It is also not unlikely that Ms. Oduah is in the league of Mr. President’s benefactors.

“Though the President has set up a panel to investigate the allegations, but it must be noted that most of the time when President Jonathan sets up his panels, they are to bury the issues rather than bending it to justice.”

The protesters, who presented a petition to the ICPC,  prayed that investigations should be commenced into the activities of the minister; the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority; Nigerian Airspace Management Agency;  Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria; and other relevant agencies under the Ministry of Aviation.

Chief Superintendent of ICPC in Lagos, Mr. Binga Shintema, who attended to the protesters, assured them that their petition would be acted on.

NEPC seeks increased funding for non-oil exports

NEPC seeks increased funding for non-oil exports

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council has urged the government and financial institutions to increase their support for the exportation of non-oil products.

Acting Executive Director, NEPC, Mr. Aliu Lawal, said this during a practical session/workshop organised for stakeholders in exporting by the council on ‘Access to finance for export.’

Lawal, who was represented by Mr. Faleke Olusegun, said access to fund was one of the major challenges confronting non-oil products’ exporters.

He said, “In Nigeria, access to finance remains a big challenge despite the efforts of the government in providing some interventions to some sectors.

“It is common knowledge that accessing financial facility from specialised and commercial banks by exporters had not been smooth, perhaps, because of lack of basic knowledge about alternative funding sources and the inability to provide bankable business plans.

He said the export sector would develop faster if there was adequate financing, adding that exported products have increased between 2009 and 2012.

“Nigeria’s non-oil export has been growing very fast in the last five years for example; Nigeria’s export has grown with an increase of more than 50 per cent. Currently, Nigeria exports 117 products to about 103 countries.

“With the abundant resources at our disposal, Nigeria’s export could do better if the financial requirements are provided,” he added.

Acting Zonal Controller, NEPC, Lagos, Mrs. Obidike Evelyn, noted that the workshop was tailored to offer support to exporters by letting them know the available financial options and tools.

“One of the critical determinants of a successful export business is access to finance. This has hitherto become a major constraint that needs to be addressed, she said.

Ecoponds canvasses investment in fish farming

Ecoponds canvasses investment in fish farming

Ecoponds, an aquaculture technological company, has urged investors and the government to invest in fish farming.

The consultants of the company, Mr. George Chagoury, Mr. Abdulsamad Edewor and Mr. Tobi Ashafa, gave the advice during a facility tour of the company in Ikorodu, Lagos on Thursday.

They noted that investing in fish farming would reduce the level of unemployment in the country, adding that creating business opportunities for people in aquaculture – fish farming – would boost the country’s economic growth.

Ashafa said, “The faith of local Nigerian farmers and aquaculturists in subsistence farming has arrested the development of aquaculture in Nigeria, a reason that made us to set up an outfit to revolutionise fish production in the country through full mechanisation of the industry.

“For three years, we have carried out a research on how fish farmers could increase the frequency of sales, up to every week, rather than longer periods of months as seen with fish farmers using still-water ponds.”

Chagoury, who is an engineer, explained that many fish farmers could not switch to the advanced technological method despite its profitability, because of their inability to access funds from retail banks and government agencies.

He said, “Developing ecoponds 0.5 technology was necessitated by the increasing demand for fish and the need for farmers to have more bargaining power through constant periodic sales.

“There is no way a still-water model can produce stock for periodic sales because of the lack of a proper production plan.”Edewor also urged the government to regulate fish feed production, lamenting that the markets were awash with cheap, locally-produced fish that were non-profitable.”

701,000 persons enslaved in Nigeria – Report

701,000 persons enslaved in Nigeria – Report

The Global Slavery Index 2013 report has revealed that about 701,032 people are enslaved in Nigeria.
The comprehensive report, which examined the level of global slavery, has on Nigeria as one of the countries with high slaves.

A study of the analysis showed that Nigeria had the highest slavery rate in Africa and fourth highest among the 162 countries used for the survey.

The report on its ‘list of shame’ showed that 30 million people are living as slaves around the world.
It added that the top 10 countries on the list accounted for more than three quarters of the 29.8 million people living in slavery.

The top countries are Nigeria with 701,032 enslaved people; Ethiopia, 651,110; Russia, 516,217; Thailand, 472,811; Democratic Republic of Congo, 462,327; Burma, 384,037; and Bangladesh having 343,192 persons enslaved.

Other countries therefore listed the Global Slavery Index, published by the Australia-based Walk Free Foundation are India, China and Pakistan.

It noted that India had by far the most slaves, with an estimated 14 million people, followed by China, 2,949,243 and Pakistan with 2,127,132.

In terms of countries with the highest of proportion of slaves, Mauritania in West Africa topped the table, with about 4% of its 3.4 million people enslaved; followed by Haiti; Pakistan; India and Nepal.

The index, which claimed to contain the “most authoritative data on slavery conditions worldwide,” was the product of Australian mining magnate and philanthropist Andrew Forrest’s commitment to stamp out global slavery.

The index, which draws on 10 years of research into slavery conditions around the world, was produced by a team of four authors supported by 22 other experts and advisers.

It ranked 162 countries, including Nigeria, according to the number of people living in slavery, the risk of enslavement and the robustness of government responses to the problem.

Forrest was ranked by Forbes as Australia’s fifth richest man, with an estimated net worth of $5.7bn.

CSOs visit Osun over schools merger crisis

CSOs visit Osun over schools merger crisis

Some civil society organisations have said they will be meeting with certain groups and individuals to end the schools merger crisis in Osun State.

Among the groups to be met are the Osun Parents Association, Association of Principals; National Union of Teachers, Nigeria Labour Congress, Head of Teachers of Primary Schools, the Baptist Missionary and Osun State Government.

Christian and Muslim groups in Osun have taken on themselves over the move by the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration to merge public schools in the state in line with its newly introduced 4-5-3 system of education.

Speaking on behalf of the CSOs, Mr. Olarenwaju Suraju, explained that they would be meeting the aggrieved parties to find a lasting solution to the merger problem.

He said, “Our plan is to undertake a thorough assessment of the true situation beyond media reports. The proposed three-day assessment tour and meetings will be undertaken by no fewer than 10 representatives’ of leading different civil society groups, comprising of Christians and Muslims across the country.

“We will seek to engage with the two divides not with the intention to apportion blames but to deepen the understanding of issues by our team and the two divides. This is to make for the inevitable re-appreciation of the issues in different quarters.”

He, however, urged the aggrieved party to resolve the crisis in the interest of unity and peace in the state.
“From our investigation, the schools have been taken over in the last 36 years. The only thing that was retained is the name of the school, not the owners. We want to go and bridge the gap and not predict the outcome,” he added.

Also, Programme Coordinator, Network on Police Reforms in Nigeria, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, said, “We will report out findings in the best and credible manner. It is to defend democracy and not only Osun State. Public hearing is critical to acceptance, government must consult and the media must go beyond the visible.”

Bulletproof car scandal: Airline operators, others demand investigation

Bulletproof car scandal: Airline operators, others demand investigation

Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah
Some stakeholders in the aviation industry and civil society  groups   have called on the nation’s anti-corruption  agencies to investigate the purchase of two bulletproof vehicles for the Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah.

The vehicles valued at a whopping $1.6m(about N225m) were said to have been  delivered to Oduah in August by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

But the aviation industry stakeholders and the groups, in separate interviews with our correspondents on Thursday, said their calls for a probe  were  necessary in order to identify and prosecute those behind the controversial deal.

The aviation stakeholders are the  Airline Operators of Nigerian and  Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria.
AON, through its Assistant General Secretary, Mr. Muhammed Tukur, described the purchase of the bulletproof cars as unfortunate, saying   it showed the high level of  corruption  in Nigeria .
It  said, “This   shows how bad things have gone in this country; that the minister has admitted to receiving the cars from the NCAA   reveals that they  do not care for the people of this country.
“We can see that all these people and parastatals use their offices to siphon funds for anything they want. We  think there is no other option but for her (Oduah)  to resign her appointment as the aviation minister.
“Also, we call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to thoroughly investigate the issue, because, some of us had foresight of these things, and we know that there are more coming  up soon.”
The ATSSSAN said the ‘necessary government agencies’ should not hesitate to prosecute anyone found to have played a role in the purchase of the bulletproof cars.
“We have government agencies that can look into such issues as this  such as the EFCC. So, these agencies should look into the matter, and if they find out that it is indeed true, they should take the appropriate action,” its  National President, Mr. Ben Okewu, told one of our correspondents.
Also,  WACI, through its Executive Director, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, argued that   the procurement of the bulletproof  vehicles showed the level of   culture of impunity in the  country.
It therefore called on the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies to conduct a holistic investigation into the issue with a view to prosecuting those found culpable in the   Aviation ministry and  the NCAA.
It  said, “If it is true that the NCAA bought the said bulletproof cars for that amount, because it is not the prerogative of the NCAA to do so, it shows the impunity in the society.
“Impunity is on the rise in this country; people do whatever they like.
“There should be a painstaking investigation of the NCAA and the ministry and anybody found culpable should be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others. The EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies should ensure that the matter is investigated thoroughly.”
On its part,  CACOL noted that Oduah, in order to satisfy her ostentatious lifestyle, had by accepting the cars  compromised the safety of Nigerians.
Its  Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran, said, “ When the minister asked NCAA  to buy  her bulletproof cars worth $1.6m   because of alleged threats to her life. Where did she expect them to get the money?
“She expected them to compromise standard of course. It is now clear that the frequent air accidents are products of corruption and incompetence in our aviation sector.”
It called on the anti-graft agencies to “investigate the matter and prosecute anyone found to have abused their office.”
Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Uche Onyeagucha,    said the amount involved in the purchase of the cars for Oduah was beyond the approval  limit of the minister and the NCAA.
This, according to him, calls for  finding  out if  a request for the purchase of the vehicles  was forwarded to the Federal Executive Council  or not.
Onyeagucha said the number of past and present political office holders in the country using bulletproof cars was outrageous.
He urged Nigerian leaders  to learn from the Mexico experience where most of the people using bulletproof cars  had been  killed.
The PUNCH  learnt in Abuja that the NCAA  also  spent millions of naira on 13 Prado jeeps and 21 Corolla cars  for its directors and general managers.
One of our correspondents gathered that  the  jeeps were bought for the directors and  the  corolla cars for the general managers.
A senior official of the agency who pleaded for anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press on the issue,  admitted that the   purchase of the cars and  jeeps was an anomaly.
He  however said it was a practice that was not confined to the aviation ministry alone.
The source  said, “I think that during the course of the purchase of the cars  that the management  decided to also get  the bulletproof cars for the minister. However, some of the cars have not been given to their owners. They are still parked at the car lots.”
One of our correspondents gathered that some members of staff who  felt they might be left  out of the car bonanza leaked to the press, the information which was originally designed to be a petition to the EFCC.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the NCAA, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke, confirmed that he was  aware of the purchase of some cars by  the authority.

He, however, declined comments when asked to name the  beneficiaries and whether the agency was under any obligation to buy vehicles for the minister despite the fact that the ministry had its own budget.

The 2013 Budget of  Aviation ministry  revealed that there was no provision for the purchase of cars. About  N4.2bn was budgeted for the maintenance of motor vehicles, transport and equipment; N1.2bn for the purchase of trucks and N100m was  for staff buses.

National dialogue ill-timed, deceptive –APC chieftain

National dialogue ill-timed, deceptive –APC chieftain

The national dialogue being planned by the Federal Government is ill-timed and a ploy to deceive the citizens, a chieftain of the All progressive Congress in Lagos State, Chief Ayo Akande, said in a statement on Thursday.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on Monday inaugurated a 13-man committee headed by Senator Femi Okunrounmu to prepare the blue print for the conference within one month.
The President, in his Independence anniversary broadcast on October 1 had said the willingness of the Federal Government to hold a national dialogue was to yield to the yearnings of notable Nigerians calling for it.
But, Akande in his statement accused the Federal Government of insincerity in holding the conference at this moment, saying that it was ill-timed.
He said, “There was no sincerity in the decision to inaugurate this conference. It is a mere diversionary measure typical of most aborted national debates and conferences instituted by past leaders of the country.
“The convocation of the conference is ill-timed and called for caution on the part of Nigerians not to swallow the bait of President Jonathan.
“We have shouted for this national conference for many years from the period of Obasanjo to Yar-adua to no avail. Why now that the election is at the corner? It will create a lot of confusion.”
The APC chieftain explained that the inauguration of the conference was the Peoples Democratic Party’s “Greek gift” to Nigerians.
“This gift will precipitate so much upheavals that will take the concentration off the forthcoming 2015 elections in the country, hence it is a ploy to rig the election,” he added.

Nigeria is sick, needs prayers – Abiara

Prophet Kayode Abiara

Nigeria is sick, needs prayers – Abiara

The General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church WorldWide, Prophet Samuel Abiara, has lamented that leaders in the country do not protect the interest of the masses.

He explained that poor leadership was responsible for the challenges facing the country, saying that the “country is sick”.

Abiara said this at the beginning of a three-day church programme at the Joseph Ayo Babalola International Miracle Camp, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State, on Wednesday.

He said, “You don’t need a soothsayer to tell you that Nigeria is sick. We are sick in all areas. There are unjust killings of people and deaths everywhere and I must tell you that people are hungry. Our leaders are busy fighting one another instead of coming together to make Nigeria better.

“Many of our leaders don’t have time for the common man. There is a need for us to begin to ensure that the common man does not continue to suffer. We need to pray for this nation because this nation is sick. Government is sick; if anybody says government is not sick, it is a lie. This nation needs prayer.”

While dismissing pastors, who claimed to have visited  heaven and returned, Abiara warned “unrecognised churches” and people to stop parading themselves as members of the CAC church.

He added, “For those pastors, who claim to be part of us and have given the church a bad name; the Bible has not left us in darkness. The Bible says in the last days, there will be evil people who will corrupt the faith. The church authority is doing something to arrest the drift. Soon, you will see us take action on people like that.”

t-fam5 G o 0 er-spacing:-.3pt’>The state government has  started schools reclassification and restructuring whereby primary and secondary school level of education are divided into elementary, middle and high schools.

Schools  are being merged in the process and this has attracted severe criticisms from some quarters especially from Christians who believe that the policy would erase their Christian  heritage.

Specifically, members of the Osun  Baptist Conference had  resisted the attempt to merge male students with the female students of the Baptist Girls High School, Osobo on October 2.

They also protested the merging of hijab-wearing pupils with the pupils of Baptist High School, Iwo.

But Aregbesola has  already  allayed fears of Christians and other religious groups about the merger saying “ no single group, organisation individual, religious or social body’s interest would suffer as a result of the ongoing re-classification and reform.”

The governor in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, urged the people of the state “to discountenance any untrue and baseless insinuation some anti-progress elements may be spreading across the state.”

He explained that the new policy was not aimed at erasing Christian heritage but was one of the efforts being made by the state government to transform the education sector in the state.

‘Neighbourhood security ’ll curb kidnapping’

Managing Director, Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Patrick Ifeanyi Uba

Neighbourhood security ’ll curb kidnapping - Uba

Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra State, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has recommended neighbourhood security for curbing insecurity in the state.

Ubah in a statement on Sunday, noted that part of his plan if elected the governor of the state on November 16, was to tighten security and ensure independence of the judiciary.

He lamented the growing scourge of insecurity including kidnapping and ritual killings in the state.

He said, “We will implement a comprehensive plan to tackle the root causes of insecurity. The reliance on the use of force alone will not stem the tide of insecurity in the state. We will focus on preventive measures to stop crimes from being committed, rather than wait to detect crimes and apprehend offenders after the act had been committed.

“We will implement job and training programmes to take idle youths off the streets and keep them meaningfully engaged.

“We will also involve the citizens in neighbourhood security, which shall broaden intelligence-gathering capabilities.”

He emphasised the importance of equipping security agencies, saying, “We will acquire helicopters and hightech surveillance equipment for the police and other security stakeholders for use in the monitoring of our borders so as to nip crime in the bud.”

Eid-el-Kabir: Police beef up security for Sallah

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered security beef up in all strategic and vulnerable areas nationwide to achieve an incident-free Sallah.
The IG in a signal on Saturday to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in-charge of zones and Commissioners of Police directed that policemen must be visible in all the key areas.
The commanders in-charge of the Police Special Forces,  including the Air Wing, the Maritime Command, the Counter -Terrorism Unit and the Border Patrol Units were directed to ensure “purposeful and strategic deployment of their personnel and logistics to check all criminal threats”.
Also, a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, in Abuja on Sunday said that the CPs had been directed to adequately protect all essential infrastructure and vulnerable points, including highways, motor parks, places of worship, shopping malls and recreational centres.
The statement added that commanders of Police Mobile Force Squadrons were also urged to ensure that their respective Quick Reactionary Units remained on high alert throughout the holiday period.
The IG reminded operational commanders that though the nation was on holiday, policemen  should not be on vacation and that all commanders were expected to remain at their duty posts throughout the Sallah period.
The statement added, “Officers and men deployed for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations have been enjoined to conduct themselves in a most professional manner, in line with the Force Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics and other extant laws regulating the rules of engagement.
The IG charged them to be mindful of the fundamental rights of the citizens, while discharging their responsibilities.”
Abubakar sought the cooperation of all Nigerians in the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Police and pledged the loyalty of the Force to the nation.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Housing, Lands and Urban Development, Gbenga Ashafa, has urged Muslims to pray for Nigeria to regain its lost pride during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
In his Sallah message, Ashafa enjoined  Muslims to use this year’s celebration as opportunity to reflect on their spiritual lives, pray for themselves and the nation at large.
“This period reminds us to be faithful to the Almighty God and live according to His dictates, especially in our world that has been seriously wounded by various vices of all kinds. It also reminds us that we all (both Muslims and Christians) should fervently pray for our nation at this trying time so that Nigeria will regain its pride of place among other nations of the world” he said.

FG to transport Lar’s corpse to Nigeria

Nigeria’s ambassador to United State, Prof. Ade Adefuye, has said that the Federal Government will bear the cost of conveying the body of the late pioneer National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Solomon Lar, back to the country.

Adefuye said this during a Service of Songs organised by US-based Nigerians and the Nigerian Embassy in the US on Sunday night.

According to a statement, US-based Nigerians and others from Canada, including Nigeria’s Ambassador there, Ojo Maduekwe, trooped to the Nigerian Embassy to pay tribute.
Lar died last week at a US hospital. He was aged 90.

Adefuye explained that it was the responsibility of the Federal Government to sponsor the return of Lar’s corpse because of the “historic role” he played in forming the United Middle-Belt Congress.

He said, “Taking care of the cost of the body’s transfer to Nigeria is the right thing for the government to do. The embassy had taken responsibility for repatriating the elder statesman’s remains home.

“This is the right thing to do. Nigerians should not be surprised when the right and proper thing is done.

The Presidency wishes to express its appreciation at the historic roles Chief Lar had played in forming the United Middle-Belt Congress in the ‘50s in the run up to the country’s independence and then also the NPP in the 70s to nudge the military out of politics.”\

He also hailed Lar’s role in forming the G-34, which opposed the late dictator, General Sanni Abacha, and ultimately transformed into the PDP.

Chief Lar’s wife, Ambassador Mary Lar, said her husband, before breathing his last, clasped his hands together and said, “Nigeria, one; Plateau, one; Tarok, one,” expressing his desire for unity in Nigeria.

“One day we said to each other, if there was ever an opportunity to marry again in another world and place, we would look for each other again and re-marry,” Lar’s widow said.
