Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State on Friday in Asaba, honoured Delta-born Africa’s fastest woman, Blessing Okagbare with a charge on politicians not to distract the athlete as she prepares for the 2016 Olympics.

Speaking during a state reception Asaba,  Uduaghan said those who desire to appreciate Okagbare should do so quietly without politicizing her in order to insulate her for the set goal of gold medals in the 2016 Olympics.

“All support for Blessing should be done privately and quietly, we should insulate her from politics, she is a role model, she is not a political model,” he said.

He added that Okagbare is “a pride to Nigeria and a pride to us in Delta State.”

According to him: “Her feat has shown that youths in the state have enormous potentials for greatness which if harnessed positively will bring great successes and positive changes to the state and the nation.”

He announced a yearly training grant of $120,000 for three years to Miss Okagbare to support her preparation for the Olympics, saying "It is to reduce the distractions that may be caused by the number of competitions she would partake in before the Olympics Games in 2016."

He also charged the State Sports Commission to identify four young potential athletes capable of winning medals that would be nurtured and groomed to represent the state and country in the 2016 Olympics Games in Brazil.

He vowed to give them training grants for their preparations and exposure to international training facilities.

The Governor gave a cash gift of N2.5 million to Okagbare, N2 million each to Mr. Daniel Etsebiminor, the local coach that discovered Blessing and Mr. Gabriel Okon, her Athletic Federation of Nigeria Coach as well as $20,000 to Mr. John Smith, her international coach.

In his remarks, the President of the AFN, Evangelist Solomon Ogba thanked the Delta State government for encouraging field and track events development in the country, stating that Delta is champion in sporting activities in the country.

While noting that Governor Uduaghan’s passion for sports could be traced to his being an athlete, Ogba stated that Okagbare placed Nigeria in the 19th position in world ranking.

Responding, Blessing Okagbare thanked Governor Uduaghan for playing important roles in her success story stating: “My career has grown from good to better but, my best is yet to come.”

She appealed to the Federal and State governments to support athletes by developing sports through funding and proper management

Mokola Flyover Not Ladoja, My Initiative – Ajimobi

Mokola Flyover Not Ladoja, My Initiative – Ajimobi

Governor Abiola Ajimobi
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has debunked claims by former governor of the state, Rashidi Ladoja, that his administration conceived the Mokola flyover bridge.

Ajimobi in a statement on Sunday explained that the bridge was not his initiative nor that of Ladoja.

Rather, he said that the recommendation for the construction of the flyover bridge, which his administration constructed and inaugurated recently, had been made as far as back as 1976 by the Committee on the Ibadan Traffic Problems.

The governor said that the committee, headed by a former governor of the state, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, had recommended the construction of flyover bridges in seven different areas within the Ibadan metropolis.

The areas according to him are Mokola; Secretariat; Challenge; Molete; Iwo Road; Dugbe and Adamasingba.

He said: “Aside the Molete flyover bridge constructed by the Gen. David Jemibewon military regime in 1976, no other flyover bridge had been constructed by any civilian administration in the state until the one built at Mokola by the Ajimobi administration.

“Even if Senator Ladoja had conceived and dreamt of building the Mokola flyover bridge when he was the governor, why did he fail to actualize his dream? Now that our administration has been able to construct the flyover, why is Ladoja calling for our heads? Why is he so desperate to pull down our government?”

The governor also berated some members of Accord Party in the state, urging them to avoid paying “pedestrian politics”, because of their boss.

“I want to advise our people not to play such game; our own is intellectual and development politics, not pedestrian politics as being played by Ladoja and his cohorts,” he added.

“Also, the programme will empower eight persons with a means of livelihood as LAWMA Highway Managers for the district. The ‘Clean Street’ project seeks to ensure that our network of customers bring tangible benefits to the communities they operate in the area of a clean and healthy environment.

“This is borne out of our belief that as a business we can be a force for social good by enriching the lives of our local communities. NBC understands that clean communities are also healthy and wealthy communities. So we can say that by this partnership, the wealthy community of Apongbon would even become wealthier.”

Anambra: PDP Group Insists on Nwoye as Candidate

Anambra: PDP Group Insists on Nwoye as Candidate

Tony Nwoye
The Truth and Reconciliation Group of the Anambra Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has insisted that Tony Nwoye remained it governorship candidate for the November 16 election in the state.

The group in a statement on Sunday by its spokesperson, Ikeagwuonwu Klinsmann, explained that information currently circulating that Senator Andy Uba is the new PDP candidate for the election should be jettisoned.
A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State had in a judgement directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to identify with the Ejike-led group that produced Uba as the authentic governorship candidate of the PDP.

But the group alleged that National Working Committee of the PDP and a High court in Abuja upheld the suspension of Andy Uba, Chris Uba, Ejike Oguebego over their “illegal conduct”.

It said: “Let us get the facts right again. Last month, Uba approached a Federal High Court in Port-Harcourt, praying the court to declare him as the PDP Candidate of Anambra state and exactly seven days ago, the same court vacated its order which it has earlier given compelling INEC and the PDP to recognize Andy Uba as the candidate of the Party in Anambra state.

“The Court threw Andy Uba’s plea to the gutters and asked him to go and work with Comrade Tony Nwoye who was the authentic candidate that emerged at the congress organised by the National Working Committee of the PDP.
"In its judgment last Thursday, the court asked Ken Emekayi to maintain a status quo while recognizing Ejike Oguebego as the Chairman of the Party in Anambra State. In a deliberate action, Senator Andy Uba and his followers started raising false reports and rumours that they have been declared the candidate of the party in the state. Which court gave them such a ruling?"

Winners emerge in creative contest for undergraduates

Winners emerge in creative contest for undergraduates

September 17, 2013 by Sodiq Oyeleke Leave a Comment

An author, Mr. Richard Ajibola, says he introduced  essay  competition to students in order to encourage creativity.

He stated this on Tuesday in Lagos during his 55th birthday.

Three students emerged as winners in this year’s competition entitled, ‘100 years of amalgamation: The dialectics of Nigeria’s structural imbalance with the contest of dysfunctional federal system.’

A Fine Art student of the University of Benin, Abass Aladi, emerged first; while Effiong Inibehe of the University of Uyo, and a 500-level University of Ibadan student, Rasheed Otegbola, came second and third respectively.

For topping the contest, Aladi took home N100, 000, while Inibehe and Otegbola received N50,000 and N30,000 respectively.

Ajibola explained that the award was to celebrate and encourage creativity, which he said was key to the development of any nation.

He said, “I have realised that in this era, people organise competitions for the purpose of sales or profit; but my motive is completely different.

“I organised the competition to promote knowledge and creativity. It is just to help the growth of Nigerian youths and commemorate my birthday.

“There were five entries among which three of them emerged as the winners. They are receiving the awards today. They are also getting cash remuneration and some copies of my books because of the passion I have for creative writing.”

Ajibola, a founding member of the Civil Liberties Organisation, however, urged the government and other well-meaning Nigerians not to relent in supporting youths.

The students, who commended Ajibola for the initiative, vowed not to relent in their academic pursuit.

Abass said, “Today is a very inspirational day for me. I will forever appreciate anyone who celebrates youth’s creativity. In fact, such people are my role models and their names occupy a place in my history book.”

Effiong said, “As a law student, I have been reading Ajibola’s write-ups and they usually impress me. This is another motivation for me to continue writing and reading. I urge other Nigerians to emulate his kind gesture.”

Nasarawa: APC Allays Fear over Emergence of B’Haram Sibilance Group

Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

Nasarawa: APC Allays Fear over Emergence of B’Haram Sibilance Group

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised the Federal Government to urgently attend to the Ombatse cult/ethnic militia crisis in Nasarawa State before it escalates out of control.

It warned FG to act fast to prevent Nasarawa from becoming another trouble spot in the country, saying the mindless violence being perpetrated by the Ombatse cult/ethnic militia in the state is fast spiralling out of control.

Some of the attacks on the state included the killing of 60 security operatives in May; May 30th and June 1st 2012, when the cult killed 15 people in an attack on Assakio community; November 21st, 2012 when the cult attacked Agyaragu community, killing nine people.

Another one is the November 17th, 2012 attack, when the cult mounted illegal road blocks and attacked motorists and commuters, injuring many including soldiers and other security agents.

After some of the attacks, the state government acted promptly by proscribing the dangerous group, meeting with elders from the Eggon ethnic group.

It also sought a peaceful solution and the sustained surveillance on the activities of the group.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said failure to act fast would see the state, which has the longest stretch of border with the federal capital territory (FCT), plunged into a crisis that may have a far-reaching effect beyond the state.

It said the lessons of the Boko Haram crisis which, through the same attitude now being exhibited towards the Nasarawa crisis, was allowed to fester and then degenerate into a slow-motion warfare, should guide the federal government to quickly bring the Nasarawa crisis under control.

The statement partly read: ''In an inexplicable decision, the federal government resorted to a policy of appeasement against those who killed security operatives who were carrying out their lawful duties. These mindless cultists were supposedly forgiven without any of them being brought to justice, thus emboldening them to continue to perpetrate their dastardly acts.

''The killings of security agents last May was not the first time the cult had attacked individuals and security operatives. Unfortunately, the kid gloves with which the cultists have been treated by the federal government, even after the killing of the security operatives, has meant more killings and destruction of property, the latest of which occurred last week, with deadly consequences.”

The party added that it would not be preferable for the FG to use force that may inflict a collateral damage on innocent citizens, saying it believed that bringing to justice the perpetrators of crime among the cultists was a good starting point.

The statement added: “How has a vicious cult become a sacred cow that can so easily mow down security operatives without consequences? Why does the FG need to wait before there is a conflagration before embarking on a panic deployment of troops to the areas hit by the latest attack by the Ombatse cult in Nasarawa? These and other questions are now being asked by right thinking Nigerians within and outside the state.

''Unfortunately, the insinuation in certain quarters now is that the FG has deliberately delayed action in bringing the cultists to justice for the crimes they have perpetrated or in stopping them from committing further atrocities because it wants the situation to deteriorate so it can then benefit from the chaos by taking over the state, either by hook or crook.”

VConnect Counsels SMEs on Online Directory

A small scale business concern

VConnect Counsels SMEs on Online Directory

A local search engine, VConnect Global Services Limited has lamented the low online presence of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, saying more than 17 million businesses lack online presence in Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement by the General Manager of the company, Mr. Deepankar Rustagi, made available to our correspondent on Monday.
He, however, advised Small and Medium Scale Enterprises to retool for online directory such as short messages, website design and optimization, among others for growth.
Rustagi said: “With about 17 Million Micro, Small and Medium Scale businesses in Nigeria, a sizeable number do not have online presence. One of the first success factors for any SMEs is to register their business with an online directory or local search engine.
“More than 700,000 businesses are currently listed with Vconnect and by listing businesses online, global visibility will be achieved. By doing this, organisations can manage their business profile including products, services and even the brands they deal on.”
The online expert explained that online visibility via priority listing and display advert banners would also help businesses to develop.
He said: “Merely listing business is not just enough. For online business directories; it does not just end at business listing. Millions of people make different searches every day.
“It also depends on the package you are operating. For us, a business gets priority listing on our website when they are on premium visibility. They appear tops when any search is done in their category of business. Hence people find them easily and they enjoy huge footfall and traffic.”
According to him, companies need to promote their businesses via display advert and bulks Short Messages aimed at specific customers.
“Organisations think that by sending bulk SMS, a business will get lot of customers. Contrary to this, business owners not only waste their hard earned money but also their time and energy. The fact is that every business owner knows who their prospect customers are, through age, gender, location classification. So there is no need for randomized SMS when you can reach out to only the people who need your product or services,” he added.

Kidnapping: CCIC Warns Pastors against Night Movement

Anglican Archbishop, Ignatius Kattey
A religious organisation, Christ Chapel International Churches has urged pastors, bishops, archbishops and other religious leaders to reduce their movement and travelling at night.
The church gave the advice during a press conference which was part of the activities to mark its 32 years anniversary in Lagos.
Chairman of CCIC Advisory Council, Pastor Dam Ibekwe, said it was lamentable that kidnappers no longer respect the men of God.
He explained the incessant rate of kidnapping, which has extended to clerics, showed the weakness of government in the country.
While condemning the Kidnap of the released Anglican Archbishop, Ignatius Kattey, he urged government at all levels not to relent in their efforts to provide empowerment for the unemployed youths.
Kattey, who is the Dean of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, was kidnapped in Rivers State on September 6 and freed last Saturday night.
Ibekwe said: “The kidnapping of clerics including Archbishop is a sign of bad leadership. I came to Lagos in 1954 and then we are free to go anywhere anytime. In fact, people prefer to some places at night because everywhere was calm but that is all over now. There is fear all over the places and that is I why we must be careful of our movement as men of God at night.
“With the situation of the country, pastors, bishops, archbishops and other religious leaders should are advised to reduce their movement at night and continue to pray that everything goes back to normal. With our prayers, we will enjoy what we used to enjoy and there is need for moral re-awakening from God.”
On the anniversary, he explained that the church has concluded plans to help the youths by investing in the educational sector.

Delta Sets Up Task Force on School Enrolment

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan

Delta Sets Up Task Force on School Enrolment

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan today [16-9-13] in Asaba inaugurated over 25 Education Special Marshals and 100 Education Marshals (EduMarshals) with a charge to ensure that all school-age children attend school compulsorily.

Dr. Uduaghan, who said that education was the bedrock of every society, noted that the inauguration of the Education Marshals was necessary to ensure that children of school age especially the eight per cent that were not in school benefitted from the free education programme of the state government.
Besides, he said that the programme would educate the parents on the need to send their wards to school rather than to hawk during school hours.
He urged parents to send their wards to schools as the state government has provided the enabling environment to give the children the best in education through the provision of free and qualitative education up to secondary school level.
In addition, he disclosed that the government has provided scholarship to Deltans in high institutions of learning, built and renovated schools across the state, employed more teachers and improved the income of parents through the state micro-credit scheme.
His words: “This programme is a serious business to get our children back to school. Over 8% of Delta children are not in school according to the United Nation statistics; this is as a result of financial, cultural, traditional and economic issues. Government have tried to address these excuses by building and renovating schools in the state, employing more teachers and improving the income of parents through the state Micro-Credit Scheme.”
Governor Uduaghan commended various communities that have inaugurated programmes to ensure that children in their localities were in schools and advised them to continue in their effort as they key into the state government initiative of EduMarshals.
“Education is the best legacy we can bequeath to our children and our society, because if our children are well educated, they can take informed decisions on issues,” he stated.
While addressing school children at the venue, the Governor advised them to ensure that they go to school early and stay till the close of school hours as any child caught by the EduMarshals outside school premises during school hours would be punished and the parents sanctioned.
He admonished the children not to hawk or be found selling in their parents stores during school hours while they are supposed to be in school saying: “If your parents give you wares to go and hawk or send you to go to their shops to sell while you are supposed to be in school don’t go.”
Governor Uduaghan named the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and the Chief Executive Officer of This Day Newspaper, Prince Nduka Obiagbena as Ambassadors of Education because of their commitment to education especially in the state.
The Governor also inaugurated about 25 Education Special Marshals and 100 EduMarshals to help monitor this initiative in their respective zones and field of endeavours to ensure its success.
In a welcome address, The Commission of Higher Education, Professor Hope Eghagha, who represented the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare explained that the initiative was to ensure that no child of school age was found outside the school premises hawking or selling during school hours.

Kidnapping: CCIC warns pastors against night travels

Kidnapping: CCIC warns pastors against night travels

A religious organisation, Christ Chapel International Churches has urged pastors, bishops, archbishops and other religious leaders to reduce their movement and travelling at night.
The church gave the advice during a press conference which was part of activities to mark its 32 years anniversary in Lagos.
Chairman of CCIC Advisory Council, Pastor Dam Ibekwe, said it was lamentable that kidnappers no longer respect  men of God.
He explained that the incessant rate of kidnapping, which has extended to clerics, showed the weakness of government in the country.
While condemning the kidnap of the recently-released  Dean, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Archbishop, Ignatius Kattey, he urged government at all levels not to relent in their efforts to provide empowerment for the unemployed youths.
Kattey, who is the Dean of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, was kidnapped in Rivers State on September 6 and freed last Saturday.
Ibekwe said, “The kidnapping of clerics including the Archbishop is a sign of bad leadership. I came to Lagos in 1954 and then we are free to go anywhere anytime. In fact, people prefer to go to some places at night because everywhere was calm but that is all over now. There is fear all over the places and that is why we must be careful of our movement as men of God at night.
“With the situation of the country, pastors, bishops, archbishops and other religious leaders are advised to reduce their movement at night and continue to pray that everything goes back to normal. With our prayers, we will enjoy what we used to enjoy and there is need for moral re-awakening from God.”
On the anniversary, he explained that the church had concluded plans to help the youths by investing in the educational sector.
Meanwhile, a member of the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, has said that poverty and joblessness should not be an excuse for anybody to indulge in kidnapping and armed robbery.
Abe, who represents Rivers South East in the Senate, explained that Nigeria could no longer toy with the issue of security. He added that such an alibi was an insult to millions of poor Nigerians that had refused to kill or harm anybody to better their lot.
Speaking when he visited Kattey at his residence in Eleme on Monday, the lawmaker charged Nigerians to see the travails of the cleric in the hands of kidnappers as a wake-up call to matters concerning security.
It will be recalled that Kattey, who was kidnapped on September 6, 2013, regained his freedom after being taken hostage by hoodlums for nine days.
“I just want to use this opportunity to thank Christian faithful across the country. Every Christian in this country showed concern. So, I thank all of us for what God has done and to say that this actually is a wake-up call for us as a country.
“We can no longer afford to play with the issue of security. It is by the grace of God that we are today gathered here, smiling and clapping; the story could have been the other way.
“Joblessness and financial challenges are no excuses for kidnapping and armed robbery. It is an insult to all the millions of people who are poor, who are struggling, and who have refused to kill anybody or to harm another person to better their lot,” Abe stressed.

NBC Holds Boundary Resolution Meetings in Ekiti

NBC Holds Boundary Resolution Meetings in Ekiti

The National Boundary Commission, (NBC) has been urged to expedite action at resolving unresolved lingering inter and intra boundary matters in order to establish perpetual peace and mutual understanding in the affected such areas.

Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Professor Modupe Adelabu made the appeal while declaring open the joint meeting of Officials on Ekiti/Osun and Ekiti/Kwara inter-state boundaries held at the Lady Jibowu Hall, Government House, Ado-Ekiti.

She noted that quick and amicable resolutions of such boundary disputes will engender lasting peace and promote development in such areas.

Professor Adelabu, who explained that Ekiti and the state of Osun inherited some of the lingering boundary problems, expressed the belief that with mutual understanding and the cordial relationship that exist between the government of the two states, the problems shall end during the tenure of Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti and his counterpart in Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

According to the deputy governor: “The boundary disputes cover five local government areas on the side of Ekiti namely Moba, Ijero, Ekiti West, Efon and Ekiti South West while the tripartite point between Ekiti, Ondo and Osun States in Ogotun/Owena/Ikeji respectively is another standing issue delaying the demarcation of other sectors along the boundary.”

Adelabu appealed to all parties concerned to display understanding throughout the meetings which was at the instance if the National Boundary Commission in a bid to getting the problems resolved adding that no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere where there is provocation, tension rancour and acrimony

In her own remarks, the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Titi Laoye-Tomori expressed the delight of the state at the joint meeting which she said was part of efforts to put a final rest to the protracted border disputes between Osun and Ekiti States.

She said her governor is keenly interested and committed to an amicable resolution of the lingering boundary dispute which he sees as a mere family affair because the disputes were already portending an unwelcome development which is already affecting the prevailing mutual understanding between the affected communities both states.

Otunba Titi Laoye-Tomori, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the State of Osun, Alhaji Moshood Olalekan Adeoti, explained that the inability of both states to amicably resolve the crisis led to series of meetings conveyed by the National Boundary Commission.

She therefore urged the NBC to take its decision without fear or favour and stop playing politics with sensitive issues while reaffirming that the people of the State of Osun will continue to be peaceful and law abiding as the state believe that development can only thrive in an atmosphere free of crisis and rancour.

The NBC Director-General, Dr. Mohammad Bose Ahmad in his opening remarks noted that boundary disputes occur all over the world and have led to great development and more cordial relationships between border communities and states where people living in such areas allowed reason to prevail and amicably resolved the matters.

He expressed optimism that the joint meetings of the officials on Ekiti/Osun and Ekiti/Kwara interstate boundaries scheduled for Monday and Tuesday would be successful judging by the arrangements put in place by the Ekiti State Government for their success and large turn-out of affected communities, including their traditional rulers who are critical stakeholders.

Dr. Ahmad, who remarked that the governments of Ekiti and State of Osun are very cordial and at peace with each other therefore charged stakeholders from the states to allow reason to prevail and have the considerate spirit of give and take which is highly necessary for quick and amicable resolution of all the boundary disputes once and for all.

Atiku relives 2007 poll experience

Former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Atiku relives 2007 poll experience

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Peoples Democratic Party and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of contributing to his failed bid to win the 2007 presidential election.
Among the other institutions the presidential aspirant named in a statement, titled ‘I will never stop fighting for democracy’, on Monday were the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, National Council for Privatisation and those he referred to as “aggrieved power-mongers.”
Atiku, who contested and lost the presidential election on the platform of the Action Congress in 2007, lost the PDP primaries in 2011 to President Goodluck Jonathan.
Atiku said he knew that he would lose the 2007 presidential election but refused to yield to pressure mounted him to back out.
He said, “Two nights before the 2007 presidential election, and we were about to lose. It was my first run in a general election for the presidency and I knew it would be a heavy loss. Two weeks before that evening, two state governors had visited my home to beg me to step down. There had been rumours the results of the yet-to-be-held elections had already been tabulated and sent to the INEC.
“At the time, I believed the people of Nigeria would see this as a battle to save the soul of the country and would judge me fairly. What I did not see coming was one of the best executed smear campaigns aimed at tarnishing everything I had legitimately worked to achieve in our struggle for democracy.”
He expressed disappointment that he was betrayed by the PDP and the commission, which  he said he contributed to their establishment.
He claimed that after losing the election, which he referred to as a battle, he still felt he had won “a war to preserve the sanctity of our democratic process.”
The former vice president added, “We are all products of our history. Mine was formed in the spring of 1995, when our dictator, General Sani Abacha, sentenced my mentor, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, to death and former boss Olusegun Obasanjo to life in prison in sham trials. He went so far as to send a hit squad to open fire on my family (members) and I at our home in Kaduna. That was the very night I vowed that when we defeated this military junta, I would never allow another despot to sit and rule over the people of Nigeria.”

I Was Betrayed by EFCC, PDP in 2007 – Atiku

I Was Betrayed by EFCC, PDP in 2007 – Atiku

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) among other institutions contributed to his losing the 2007 presidential election.
Among the other institutions the veteran presidential aspirant mentioned in a statement, titled ‘I will never stop fighting for democracy’, were the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, National Council of Privatisation committee and those he referred to as “aggrieved power-mongers”.
Atiku, who contested and lost the presidential elections on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria in 2007, lost the PDP primaries in 2011 for a second presidential attempt.
According to him, he knows that he would lose the 2007 presidential election but refused yield advice to back out.
He said: “It was two nights before the 2007 Presidential Elections, and we were about to lose. It was my first, and only, run in a general election for president, and I knew it would be a heavy loss. Two weeks prior to that evening, two state governors had visited my home to beg me to step aside. There had been rumours the results of the yet-to-be-held elections had already been tabulated and sent to INEC.
“At the time I believed the people of Nigeria would see this as a battle to save the soul of the country, and would judge me fairly. What I did not see coming was one of the best-executed smear campaigns aimed at tarnishing everything I had legitimately worked to achieve in our struggle for democracy.
“The aggrieved power-mongers threw every contrived accusation they could at me, from EFCC, to PTDF, to the NCP committee. And despite constant and total vindication at every turn by our courts, in the end battles are won and lost in the court of public opinion. And despite zero evidence or guilt, these opponents of democracy remain unyielding in their attempts to smear my hard-earned reputation.”
He expressed disappointment that he was betrayed by the commission and party he contributed to their establishment.

He claimed that after losing election, which he referred to as a battle; he still felt he had won “a war to preserve the sanctity of our democratic process.”
He said: “Why did I continue in an election that I knew clearly I was about to lose? It never mattered that from a moment I bought my mother a home as a 14-year-old boy, I was running various businesses to provide for my family. I was orphaned from the political party I helped start, hounded by the very people I helped bring into government, hunted by the EFCC I helped establish with start-up funding, after having been merely a shell agency when it was initially set up. Yet, in the end, the EFCC proved not one case against me.
“We are all products of our history. Mine was formed in the spring of 1995, when our dictator, General Sani Abacha, sentenced my mentor Shehu Musa Yar’Adua to death and former boss Olusegun Obasanjo to life in prison in sham trials. He went so far as to send a hit squad to open fire on my family and me at our home in Kaduna. The injustice done to Muslims

Azuka Onwuka

The injustice done to Muslims

One thing a Nigerian hates is to hear: “Nigerians are fraudulent” or “Nigerians are drug traffickers.” Most Nigerians take offence at this unfair generalisation and stereotyping. Most Nigerians are always quick to say that it is unfair to use the activities of less than one per cent of the population to describe 170 million people. That is true.

Ironically, the same people who take offence when their nation is stereotyped do not think twice before stereotyping Muslims. To such people, there is a justification for that: Most suicide bombers are Muslims. But when you point out to them many Muslims that have never been associated with violence or religious intolerance, they tell you: “Those ones are different.” You are then left to wonder: If those ones, who are Muslims, are different, why then tar all Muslims with the same brush?

But then, many people enjoy stereotyping and taunting others that have a different culture, religion or race. It makes them feel superior.

Religion is one sure-fire means through which a person with only elementary school education can make a professor commit suicide willingly and happily. The reason is that there is no nobler act than that which is presumably done to satisfy the Almighty, thereby attracting the reward of eternal bliss to the individual.
On November 18, 1978, about 920 people were killed through a combination of murder and mass suicide, ordered by Jim Jones, an American who had broken away from the Sommerset Southside Methodist Church in Indianapolis, to found the Peoples Temple Christian Church. After ordering the killing of Congressman Leo Ryan, who had visited his church to investigate claims of abuse, Jones ordered his members to commit suicide.  On the evening of November 18, in Jonestown, Jones ordered his congregation to drink a concoction of cyanide-laced, grape-flavoured drink. Parents were instructed to inject their children with the same drink.

The mass suicide and killings at Jonestown resulted in the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural, non-accidental disaster prior to the al-Qaeda attacks of September 11, 2001.

In a similar vein, on March 17, 2000,  the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God, a breakaway religious movement from the Roman Catholic Church founded by Credonia Mwerinde, Joseph Kibweteere and Bee Tait in Uganda, orchestrated the mass murder of about 778 members because of revolt about the non-fulfilment of their prophecy that the world would end on January 1, 2000. Members were made to sell off or give away their possessions. When the world did not end on January I, they shifted the date to March 17, and orchestrated an explosion that killed many members. The corpses of some members were found at other sites with signs showing that they had been poisoned, stabbed or strangled before the explosion.

These examples show how religious leaders can indoctrinate and manipulate their followers to either kill others or commit suicide in the vain belief that they are executing a divine assignment.

There is no doubt that there have been many people who have engaged in terrorism or violence in the name of Islam. The most notorious of them all is Osama bin Laden. In Nigeria, such a figure is Abubakar Shekau, who took over the headship of Boko Haram after the death of the founder, Mohammed Yusuf. One would look at the blood-thirstiness of such men and ask if they are human beings at all. What is their mission? Why kill innocent citizens for a cause that people don’t understand? These and many more questions gnaw at the hearts of many non-Muslims.
But then when you look at the people who work with you or have been your friends, you discover that many of them are devout Muslims who pursue peace and love in all their dealings. Whenever there is an act of violence involving a Muslim, such peace-loving Muslims feel as sad and angry as you do, or even more, because they get condemned and cursed for being Muslims.
Before the declaration of emergency rule in Borno, Jigawa and Adamawa states, many people in the South believed that most Northerners supported the violence of the Boko Haram. It did not matter that many Northern Muslims had been killed by the extremists. Many Northern leaders were urged to vehemently condemn the activities of the sect. But it was like a Catch-22: Condemn them and get killed; keep quiet and be called a sympathiser or sponsor of the sect.

It was only when the army got an upper hand in the fight against the sect that youths of the North came out in their hundreds as “Civilian JTF” to fight against the sect. They complained that Boko Haram had killed their relatives and destroyed their communities. They mounted roadblocks and also passed information to the army regarding members of the Boko Haram. A man was even said to have invited the army to come for his Boko Haram son, and when the son was killed, the man was said to have expressed happiness that such a deviant son had been eliminated.

In retaliation, the Boko Haram members have unleashed their wrath on these youths that had risen against them. They have killed many of these youths whom they believed had made it easier for the military to smoke them out and kill them, including their leader, Shekau, whom the military announced must have died in a confrontation with the army.

It became clear that it was fear of being wiped out with one’s family that made many people in the North to keep quiet about the Boko Haram until now.

Religion is a thing of faith and belief. It comes with passion. It comes with submission. Most times you are not meant to question anything. If you ask questions, it could attract dire consequences, depending on your religion or religious leader.

In addition, most people are adherents of a particular religion because they were born into it. The percentage of people who move out of their parents’ religion is low. For example, a Christian may change from the denomination of his parents to another Christian denomination but the percentage of Christians who become Muslims or Buddhists is small, and vice versa.

If one was born to Sokoto parents, one would most likely be a Muslim. If one was born to Anambra parents, one would most likely be a Christian. If one was born to Jewish parents in Israel, one would most likely practise Judaism. Likewise, someone born to Indian parents has a high chance of being a Hindu. Nobody chose his or her parents, state or country.
Furthermore, every religion believes that it is the best: the one ordered by the Almighty. Therefore, it is futile for you to believe that you can force or cajole others to see the light and leave their religions for yours. Once in a while, someone would move to another religion, but it is impossible for all human beings to convert to one religion.

But even though the minority Muslims who have guns and bombs tend to overawe other Muslims, the peaceful majority need to also fight back, not through guns and bombs, but through a type of demarketing strategy. One key way of doing this is to mount a persistent campaign of branding the violent and extremist Muslims as enemies of Islam. The reason these people kill others and themselves is because they believe they are carrying out a divine assignment. If increasingly, they are portrayed as those working against Allah, and those who will end up in hell, it will help to make their activities less popular and attractive.

There is also a need to always identify any preacher who directly or indirectly preaches hate, and report him to the authorities. Such preachers are the ones that sow the seed of hatred in people and make them think that they have a divine duty to kill or destroy. No man is born a terrorist or a hate monger. People get indoctrinated by others.

Oyo Needs Rescue from Ladoja’s Pedestrian Politics - APC

Oyo Needs Rescue from Ladoja’s Pedestrian Politics - APC

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressive Party (APC) has said that the latest diatribes against the ruling party in the state from the Accord Party and its leader, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, is a confirmation of what Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State had always said that the state needed to be rescued from the vice grip of pedestrian and petty politics of the Ladoja era.

It made this known in a release issued by Mr. Dauda Kolawole, ex-Publicity Secretary of the defunct Aaction Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and APC interim spokesman.

According to him, Accord Party and its sole leader were still in a deep slumber and do not realise that Oyo State had since left that era of cheap blackmail and petty, pedestrian politics.

"This is a reflection of what we had been telling our people about the low-level politics we inherited. We built a first-class overhead bridge, Ladoja said it was sub-standard and sent thugs to demolish its barrier to confirm his warped and unscientific claim; we beautified Ibadan, he said it was not necessary and now, he is harping on an intangible issue that does not in any way shape our people's lives," he said.

According to him, Ladoja was "an authority in divisive politics aimed at setting people against themselves, with the ultimate aim of brothers baiting the blood of their fellow brothers".

"This is his aim. Oyo and Ibadan people have been living as brothers but Ladoja is not happy with that amity. His goal is to cause intra-state violence so that he can showcase his mastery of the politics of violence," he said.

Kolawole challenged Ladoja to react to the well-known allegation in the state that Ladoja, during his reign as Oyo governor, sent thugs to demolish the Awolowo statue.

"Imagine a Ladoja who was so disdainful of Papa Awolowo that he sent thugs to demolish his statue accusing an Awo-reincarnate government of being insensitive!" the release said.

Plateau Conflicts: EU Donates €4.5m for Peace-building

The European Union (EU) has partnered a non-governmental organisation, APURIMAC ONLUS, and two other civil society groups to ensure a stable peace process in Plateau State.

EU Acting Head of Operation in Nigeria, Alan Munday, made this known during an official launch of EU funded project in support for peace in the state.

The programme is titled ‘European Union instrument for stability support of peace building and conflict prevention in Plateau State’.

Munday said: “The programme is EU’s contribution to the ongoing peace process in Plateau State. Plateau is already overcoming its security challenges and EU feels it is high time it provided support to government and the indigenes to consolidate on the peace achieved so far.

"We are donating 4.5 million euros to fund the peace process and we indeed want to see genuine reconciliation among communities in the state, especially the immediate communities around Jos.”

He explained that EU would not stop to do all it could to ensure that lasting peace was restored in the state.

Munday said: “The programme will be directed at solving the causes of conflicts and their consequences, including tackling poverty, job creation, income generation and capacity building.

“EU is exploiting the experience of the three civil society organisations, who have been involved in peace-building programmes.”

Other civil society groups in the partnership are Search for Common Ground (SFCG) and GIZ, a German organization committed to developing the economic capacity of the Pleatue.

Country Director of APURIMAC, Mr Godwein Okoko, while giving the action plan for the project, showed an intelligent map of area of coverage.

He expressed optimism that by the end of the project the communities would have been united together in harmony.

While appreciating EU for the partnership, Okoko also commended the state government for giving APURIMAC an enabling ground to perform credibly well in the state.

Representative of the state government and Commissioner for women Affair, Mrs Olivia Dazyem, said APURIMAC, GIZ and SFCG have empowered many lives in the state.

She pledged that the state would give the needed support for the success of the peace-building process.

“At last, the state is about to enjoy peace after 13 years of conflicts," she added.

Why Lagos took Al-Mustapha to Supreme Court

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola

Denying Amaechi Access to Govt House, a Violation of Human Rights – Fashola

...Explains why Lagos took Al-Mustapha to Supreme Court

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has condemned the denial of Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi access to government house in Port Harcourt, even as he also explained why Lagos State decided to appeal Major Hamza Al-Mustapha’s case at the Supreme Court.
Ameachi had alleged with picture evidences that police blocked the entrance to Rivers State Government House after sealing the New Peoples Democratic Party's secretariat in the state.
But the Rivers State Police Command denied the allegation.
Fashola, however, in what he described as his own opinion, said the denial was a violation of Amaechi's fundamental human rights.
Fashola, who spoke at an event to mark his 2,300 days in office on Saturday, explained that though, the action was a breach of fundamental human rights, "no right is absolute".
When asked about the denial of Amaechi's access to Government House, Fashola said: "The question about the police and denial of access is not a matter of my opinion. It is a matter of commonsense; even the lowliest citizen can be prevented from access to his house. If such a citizen is denied an access to his house, it will be a breach of fundamental human rights to movement. As I always said, none of the fundamental human rights is absolute.
“Your right to movement can be restricted if for instance, police come to arrest you for reasonable allegation. Your right to freedom of expression does not extend to making utterance to damaging people’s reputation without justification. Such right is not absolute, and you can face criminal libel and civil defamation. Your right to freedom of association does not allow you to be member of secret cult.
“I believe there is a law in this country that prevents you from being a member of secret cult. None of these rights is absolute. Each of the rights creates corresponding duties. Your rights to transact business must stop where my right to move on the roads begins. You cannot turn our motorway to shops just because you have the right to do business. It is a corresponding exchange of rights and responsibilities. The better we understand this the more progress we will make."
Governor Fashola also gave reasons on why the state appealed the case of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha in the Supreme Court of Justice.
Al-Mustapha was allegedly accused of the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the supposed June 12, 1993 presidential election winner, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.
After a long trial, a High Court of Appeal court sitting in Lagos, discharged and acquitted the former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.
.
The court in its judgement explained that there was no evidence that Al-Mustapha, who had been previously sentenced to life imprisonment by a High Court, was responsible for the offence.
Nevertheless, Fashola said his government decided to take Al-Mustapha to the highest court of law to ensure justice and equality.
"We took the former Chief Security Officer to the former Head of State, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha to the Supreme Court because government places the highest premium on every human life and that families of those killed deserve every right to agitate the matter to the Supreme Court, just as the accused would have been entitled. Government has appealed on behalf of the people to the Supreme Court," he added.
Fashola also appealed to operators of commercial motorbikes in the state to avoid plying restricted routes, adding that tricycles are no different from motorbikes.
“They are therefore subject to the same provisions of the Traffic Law relating to safety and the routes they can operate; mainly the inner streets and not on the highways and I can assure you that nobody will be allowed to act outside the law,” he said.

The symposium, which was organised by the Tunji Braithwaite Foundation, was to celebrate Braithwaite’s 80th birthday anniversary and proffer solutions to some of the challenges facing the country.
The theme of the event was 'the rising threat of instability in Nigeria: Domestic and international response'.
Among other discussants moved for a Sovereign National Conference (SNC) and a platform that would guarantee revolution in the country are Political Economist, Prof. Pat Utomi; Professor of International Relations and Jurisprudence at University of Lagos, Akin Oyebode; political analyst, Alhaji Galtima Liman; and Mrs. Omoruyi  Fatayi-Williams.
According to them, the only way forward for Nigeria’s unity and development is the organisation of a SNC.
Braithwate described SNC as a sensible and peaceful resolution for tackling bad governance and corruption, which, he said, was “grave and king” issue affecting the country.
He said: “There is going to be a revolution in this country. It is long overdue and as from now it has started already immediately after this anniversary. I implore everybody to join whatever strength you have to ensure the success of the revolution. We will not allow impostors to misrule this country before we institute SNC and revolution. It is advisable for government to join the national salvation effort because people will no longer be held down.
“What they call constitutional amendment is pretence. It is dominated by the selfish interest of the National Assembly members. Before any election will take place again in this country, we must address the challenge of corruption unless; there will be no country in 2015.
"The sacking of ministers and lecturers strike did not come as a surprise. It is the beginning of the bad policies which the people are made to consume for many years.
“We are prepared and indeed, ready to heed the strident calls from all the geo-political zones of Nigeria, from men and women, young and old to commence, as a matter of urgency an altruistic procedure for the people of Nigeria to convoke SNC that will fashion for themselves and future generation a new arrangement for the peoples of Nigeria in an orderly and peaceful manner, before any further election in this country. Such landmark steps in our nation would surely halt the headlog descent into a state of anarchy.”
Falana on his part, said Nigeria has failed, adding that the assessment by the United Nations Education Fund, that Nigeria is developing was a “deceit.”
Falana said: "The statement that we have not collapsed or failing is totally false. Our leaders are selfish to the extend that they cannot protect their own interest. What UNESCO said that we are developing is a lie. If you have 10.5 million illiterate children it shows  that we are not developing.
"We truly need a SNC. Revolution must come to pass. A new liberation movement is urgently needed. Stop the New Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressive Congress, they are not for our interest. It is only here in Nigeria that we pay criminals. Unemployed youths also deserved to be paid salary since we are paying the militants."
Utomi explained that Nigeria has failed in all index of development.
"Nigeria biggest challenge is ignorance. It does not matter if someone has a PhD, there are lot of people who have PhDs and are still ignorant. Growth index shows that Nigeria is one of the worst places to live on earth," he added.
Prof. Humphrey Asobie of the Department of Political Science University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who was the keynote speaker at the event, lamented that Nigeria's poor leadership would be tackled by a new liberation for a national independence.
He said: "In the medium and long term, we should come together to launch a new national liberation movement to free Nigeria from politicians and their neo-imperialist allies. A SNC, not of nationalities, but of Nigerian working people of all categories.
"The purpose will be to begin the process of planning and strategising for a second struggle for national independence and economic democracy. January 2014, is an appropriate time for the conference."
Oyebode said, "Aso Rock seems to have lost its marble in terms of attending to what should be done. Jonathan is not a first class student if I am to asses him, I will be running charity if I give him third class.
"This is the first time we are having a PhD holder as our president and look at the embarrassment he has subdued us into."
Among those present at the anniversary were politicians, traditional rulers, lawyers, activists, medical experts, interest groups and academicians.
