Fund Varsity Education, Ekiti Deputy Gov Tells FG
Ekiti State Deputy Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu has called on the Federal Government to adequately fund university education to arrest the drift in the marketability of Nigerian graduates.
She described as unacceptable that products of the Nigerian university system have become unemployable in both the local and international markets.
Prof Adelabu, who appraised the festering faceoff between the Federal Government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a chat with reporters in Ado- Ekiti, noted that the Ivory Towers have become shadows of their glorious past.
According to her, it is shameful that the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, which is the best in the country, occupies the eighth position in Africa.
The deputy governor urged the parties to return to the drawing board and come up with a lasting solution to the recurring issue of varsity under-funding by the Federal Government.
She said: “I am sure it will end very soon. It cannot go on like this. More so that our universities are no more competitive; our graduates are unemployable just because the universities now are shadows of themselves; instructional materials are no more there; the environment is no more conducive; the varsities are under-funded; we cannot go on like this.
“OAU that is number one in Nigeria is number eight in Africa. This is disturbing. There was a time that Nigerian universities would rank among the best internationally. I think it is better for the parties now to settle the matter ones and for all so that we will not go on again and again, revisiting the funding issue of varsities and some other issues.”
On allegations that the lectures have been pursuing their own agenda, she said: “I don’t think ASUU’s concerned is for selfish reason. It is for the future of the children that they are training so that they can go out after graduation and compete like others in the open market.
“Otherwise, we will continue to wallow in poverty because if our graduates are unemployable, then there is a problem and that is what we are saying. We can’t go on like this.
“Research has shown it that Nigerian graduates are unemployable, except those who are lucky to have very rich parents who can send them to school abroad or to private institutions. We want our public institutions to be well funded so that teaching will take place and learning will take place.”
The deputy governor said the way out of the impasse is for the Federal Government to settle with ASUU once and for all.

Asaba Airport May Lift Pilgrims to Holy Land
Asaba Airport May Lift Pilgrims to Holy Land
The Delta State government is to collaborate with the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) to airlift pilgrims from the Asaba International Airport to the Holy Lands.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State said his administration would work with the NCPC to ensure that there were no hitches in the airlifting of the pilgrims, stating that neigbouring states should also, be allowed to make use of the airport to travel on pilgrimages.
Speaking at Warri when a team of the NCPC led by its Executive Secretary, Revd. John Kennedy Opara, paid him a courtesy visit, the Governor observed that the use of the Asaba International Airport to airlift pilgrims is a welcome development.
He said that it is on record that pilgrims from Delta State to the different holy lands do not abscond but use such trips for spiritual and moral reasons.
He disclosed that his administration has also mapped out programmes to ensure that pilgrims from the state do not only embark on the trips for spiritual and moral reasons, but also find time to study the agriculture programme of the places like Israel during pilgrimage.
“We have introduced a system where Deltans are allowed to study the nature of agriculture of the people of Israel while on pilgrimage, so, it is not only for spiritual benefit,” he stated noting that Nigeria has more fertile land than Israel but the agriculture sector of that country was thriving more.
He used the occasion to challenge the NCPC to have a laid-down procedure for intending pilgrims who wished to sponsor themselves to do so with ease, assuring that the state government would meet up with its quota of sending 1, 500 pilgrims to the holy land this year.
“For us in Delta State, we take the issue of pilgrimage very serious and we commend your efforts in encouraging Nigerians to go on pilgrimage because, there is a lot of benefits in going on pilgrimage,” Dr Uduaghan.
Earlier, Revd. Opara who accompanied by Commissioners in the NCPC, lauded Governor Uduaghan for the massive development being witnessed in Delta State, observing that Governor Uduaghan has a great vision for the state adding, “I believe that you coming to Delta State as a Governor is divine.”
He disclosed that 1, 500 slots have been allocated to Delta State for the next pilgrimage, stating that plans were on for the pilgrims to be airlifted from the Asaba International Airport.
Revd. Opara stated that it was important for Nigerians to go on pilgrimage because of the spiritual and moral benefits of having such trips, adding that families were now encouraged to go on pilgrimage together because a lot of benefits are derivable when families pray together.

Stowaway gets scholarship, NCAA probes Arik pilots, FAAN
Stowaway gets scholarship, NCAA probes Arik pilots, FAAN

Stowaway:
Pix 1: A teenage boy, Daniel Ihekina, who hid in the tyre hole of Arik
Air flying from Benin to Lagos. Pix 2: The boy being led away by
security agents.
Aviation
industry regulator, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has started
probing the ArikAir pilots and officials of the Federal Airports
Authority of Nigeria over alleged security breaches that led to the
arrest of a 15-year-old stowaway, Daniel Oikhena, at Lagos Airport on
Saturday.
This is even as the boy on Wednesday
landed a scholarship to study free to university level and fulfil his
dream of flying to the United States of America.
The pilot, The PUNCH learnt,
might lose his licence or be fined huge sum of money if ongoing
investigation by the regulators found him guilty of not aborting the
flight for safety checks, following the alleged passenger’s report of
presence of a strange boy some metres from the plane.
Already, the regulatory authority has
commenced full investigation into the matter, the Director-General,
NCAA, Captain Fola Akinkuotu, disclosed to our correspondent on
Wednesday.
Although the NCAA boss declined to
specify the nature of penalty it would impose on Arik Air, its pilot or
the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria if they were found guilty, he
however said, “If at the end of the day we discover that somebody has
not done what it should do, then the appropriate sections of the law
will take its full course.”
Akinkuotu stressed that there were
penalties and sanctions for breaches in the sector’ and assured that the
regulatory agency would not shy away from upholding safety and security
regulations in the aviation sector.
On the blames being traded by Arik and FAAN, the NCAA boss said the investigation would reveal whoever was liable.
He said, “Arik might say that FAAN did
not provide adequate security, but safety challenges are assuming new
trends everyday. The responsibility of any flight lies with the
operator. Arik too has responsibility. It was reported that a passenger
raised an alarm. If there is merit in that, it means there was a
possibility of doing something about it. All these our investigation
will unravel.”
The NCAA boss however said that the agency, in the meantime, had put in place measures to stop future re-occurrence.
“Every aircraft that is departing will
be followed until take-off. FAAN security will follow them. On our part,
we have to continue to monitor everything. There will be greater
monitoring at the perimeter fence and access control now.”
Akinkuotu said that the issue of stowaway was age-long and not peculiar to Nigeria and the aviation sector.
“Stowaway has been age-long since the
time when ship was invented; those with criminal intent will also be
looking for ways to break the law,” he said.
Aviation security expert and former
Military Commandant of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Group
Captain John Ojikutu, retd, said the Benin incident had shown that the
NCAA needed to audit and investigate the Arik Air security programme and
the Benin Airport security programme.
Ojikutu said, “That boy could have been a
courier for terrorists. The NCAA needs to find out how the boy knew
part of the aircraft and where to enter. How are we sure somebody did
not assist him. If the Benin Airport access control and perimeter
fencing is not porous, how did he get into the aircraft.”
Meanwhile, Oikhena has been offered a
scholarship by the De Raufs’ Volunteer Group, a group of supporters of
Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
The Director-General of the group,
Amitolu Shittu, in a statement on Wednesday, said the scholarship was
offered to the stowaway to enable the boy to achieve his target of
travelling through the air.

The Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, Mr. Olatunde Adepitan, has splashed footballers from the LGA with awards and cash prizes worth N1.5m for winning the 2012 Lagos Speaker’s Cup.
The footballers, who represented Mushin LG last year at the Speaker’s Cup, won the coveted trophy out of 38 participating teams.
During the presentation of the prizes on Monday, each of the 30 footballers got N30, 000. The four coaches got N120, 000 while the members of the sports committee were also rewarded.
Adepitan, who commended the footballers, said the winning of the trophy has promoted the LGA positively in sports.
He said, “Every responsible government must invest heavily on sports because it is one of the ways to keep the youths busy and productive. Football is a unifying factor in Nigeria; people tend to forget their background, religion, tribes, race or differences when a particular sport competition is on.

Nasarawa assembly shut as youths attack lawmakers
Nasarawa assembly shut as youths attack lawmakers

| credits: File copy
The
Nasarawa State House of Assembly was on Tuesday shut down after youths
attacked lawmakers for inviting Governor Tanko Al-Makura to answer
questions on the non-implementation of the House resolutions.
The Speaker, Alhaji Musa Muhammed,
announced this indefinite closure at a press conference attended by the
state Commissioner of Police, Shehu Umar in Lafia on Tuesday.
Mohammed said the assembly had alerted
security agencies in the state to the impending attack; and yet the
youth found their way into the assembly complex.
He said the house would no longer sit until the security of the members could be guaranteed.
Also, the police commissioner said the
police were trying to calm the situation and would ensure that the
perpetrators were brought to book.
Hundreds of youth had stormed the
Assembly on Tuesday throwing stones and other weapons at the lawmakers
after Al-Makura, appeared before the lawmakers.
The youth were not happy with the
invitation of Al-Makura by the Assembly to explain the executive’s
non-implementation of the lawmakers’ resolutions.
The youth waited outside the assembly premises until the lawmakers adjourned for the day and allowed the governor to go.
They defied security officials and pelted the lawmakers’ vehicles with stones and other materials.
The youth also defied the state governor who tried to pacify them.
Security officials had to fire tear-gas to disperse them.
Observers, however, read political
meaning into this action. This is because Al-Makura is a member of the
All Progressives Congress while the majority of the lawmakers are
members of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The Nasarawa PDP had warned of retaliation should the lawmakers be attacked.
In a statement, the Nasarawa PDP chairman, Yunana Iliya, said nobody had the monopoly of violence.
Before the fracas, Al-Makura had answered lawmakers’ questions on the floor of the Assembly.
Al-Makura had told the lawmakers that
although their resolutions were advisory, his administration had been
doing its best to ensure that the assembly’s orders were respected.

Ajimobi Re-opens Bodija Market, Donates N30m to Families of Deceased Traders
Ajimobi Re-opens Bodija Market, Donates N30m to Families of Deceased Traders
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, on Wednesday ordered the re-opening of Bodija Market, a popular market in Ibadan, even as he announced the donation of N30 million to the families of the traders who recently lost their lives to the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State.
The market had last Friday been closed by the authorities of Ibadan North Local Government, following a clash between Yoruba and Hausa traders which resulted in destruction of property.
Governor Ajimobi, while addressing the traders at the market, described the fight between the Yoruba and Hausa traders as uncalled for, saying that they should see themselves as brothers and sisters and members of one family.
He said that it was not out of place for the traders to disagree on one issue or the other, adding, however, that they should learn to reconcile and close ranks in order to ensure peaceful co-existence among them.
``From what I have seen here, I believe the camaraderie is still there. There is nobody in this world that will not fight once in a while, but it is important to reconcile and ensure that people work together.
``We cannot ensure that people will not fight but we can ensure that we minimize the likelihood of it happening, through regular consultations, meetings, reconciliations and I have decided that once in a quarter, we go round and hold meetings with the joint committee of market leaders,’’ he said.
On the N30 million donation, he said that it was aimed at cushioning the effects of the death of the affected traders on their respective families.
``You cannot pay for people’s lives but at least, we can cushion the effects of their departure by helping their families,’’ he said.
The governor also said that his administration would assist the traders who lost property to the mayhem in order to mitigate their losses.
The governor, while expressing dissatisfaction with the state of the market, assured the traders that a comprehensive rehabilitation would be carried out on the market by the government, in conjunction with Ibadan North Local Government which is overseeing the market.
``Bodija Market is regarded as the largest market in the South-West. So it is a market that is strategically important, financially important, commercially and economically important. And I believe we must give it all the necessary support.
``Because we are a trader-friendly government, we have decided to help them repair the market, provide infrastructural facilities such as water, toilets and other conveniences. More than that, we are going to build their roads and give them loans to trade under a cooperative arrangement,” the governor said.
The representatives of the traders comprising two Yoruba and two Hausas, who spoke at the occasion, thanked the governor for his prompt intervention and his efforts at restoring peace to the market.
They all promised the readiness of the traders from all ethnic groups to cooperate with the government and work together to restore peace into the market.
They commended the security agencies for the maintenance of law and order in the market during the clash.

ACCA wants increased female presence in finance
ACCA wants increased female presence in finance
The
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants has canvassed the
appointment of more females to top positions in the financial sector as a
means of promoting gender equality in the profession.
The Chief Executive Officer of the
association, Helen Brand, said this in Lagos on Tuesday at a conference
with the theme, ‘Women in finance.’
Brand, who argued that females were the
future of finance, explained that appointing women to senior finance
posts would enhance diversity and potential development in the
profession.
She said, “On the gender issue, 45 per
cent of our members and half of the intake are females. Given the rate
at which the proportion of students is changing – many have said that
the future of finance is women – and yet, women account for only 20 per
cent of the most senior posts held in finance.
“So, there is a great deal of work to
enable the thousands of young women entering the accountancy profession
to fulfil their potential and meet their aspirations.
“We believe that diversity is not simply
about gender – diverse organisations need to ensure that they address
equal opportunities in all areas – there is a diversity of cultures,
skills, experience, ideas and business perspectives that help to create
and drive great finance functions and deliver enhanced business
performance.”
She noted that a research conducted by
the ACCA showed that companies with more women on their boards
outperformed rivals with a 42 per cent high return in sales, 66 per cent
higher return on capital and 53 per cent return on equity.
She said, “We have put diversity on top
of our agenda. It is one of the main pillars of our research and insight
programme, which represents our thought leadership on key issues of the
day and of the near future. We have carried out research projects on
various aspects of diversity and the finance function.
“ACCA research report showed that
proportionally, women appear more successful in attaining executive
roles where they have financial background. 45 per cent of female
executive directors are financially qualified and 65 per cent in total
have a financial background, while 26 per cent of their male colleagues
are financially qualified and 44 per cent have a financial background.”

Ozekhome, APC chief’s abductors demand N250m ransom
Ozekhome, APC chief’s abductors demand N250m ransom

Mike Ozekhome
Indications
emerged on Tuesday that suspected abductors of Chief Mike Ozekhome
(SAN) and the All Progressives Congress leader in Edo North, Athanasius
Ogbome, had contacted the relations of their victims, demanding N250m
altogether as ransom for their release.
There were, however, conflicting reports regarding the whereabouts of the kidnapped senior advocate, his driver and Ogbome.
The victims, who all hail from Edo North, were abducted between Ehor and Iruekpen, along the Benin-Auchi road, last Friday.
While reports on social media indicated
that Ozekhome’s abductors had contacted his family and were demanding a
ransom of N150m, giving a three-day ultimatum for payment, Ozekhome’s
elder brother, Pius, was reported to have told a confidant that no
member of the family had been contacted.
A close friend of Ugbome, who spoke on
the condition of anonymity, nevertheless, confided in our correspondent
that his abductors demanded N100m for his release.
The friend said the abductors called him and demanded N100m ransom for Ogbome’s release.
He said, “They initiated contact on
Sunday but they have not called again. This man (Ogbome) has health
condition that requires constant attention.
“He is a good person and not a moneybag; they should please release him unconditionally.”
Meanwhile youths from Iviukwe,
Ozekhome’s community, on Tuesday protested against his kidnap on major
streets of Benin, demanding his unconditional release.
Speaking on behalf of the protesting
youths, Issa Adidi, said, “Ozekhome has been on the side of the masses;
he has worked for the downtrodden.
“We are not giving ultimatum to the kidnappers, but we are appealing to them for him to be released unconditionally.”
When contacted for developments on the
matter, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Eguavoen, said
the police was “seriously monitoring the situation and we are still on
search.”
On the ransom demand, Eguavoen, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the command was unaware.
Meanwhile, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto
Diocese, Mathew Kukah, has described the kidnap of the human rights
activist as shocking and “too much punishment for someone who has
sacrificed so much for the country.”
“I beg the abductors, for God’s mercies
and for the peace of the souls of those gallant police officers, who
surrendered their lives, to release the victims,” Kukah said in a
statement.
Similarly, human rights lawyer, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, said on Tuesday that Ozekhome deserved no harm.
Aturu, in a statement, pleaded with the
abductors to release Ozekhome, who he said, had made significant
contributions towards achieving a decent society.
But the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders said the abduction was an evidence of the high rate of insecurity in the country.
Executive Chairman of the coalition,
Debo Adeniran, who lamented the high rate of insecurity in the country
on Tuesday in Lagos, called for a sober reflection from Nigerians.
He said, “The state of insecurity in the
country should be a cause for concern to well-meaning Nigerians. This
is an evidence of security lapses in the country.”

Educationist advocates academic freedom for pupils
Educationist advocates academic freedom for pupils
The
principal of the Lead-Forte Gate College, Lekki, Lagos, Mr. Ben
Greyling, has said that pupils will be more creative if they are in a
good environment that guarantees academic freedom.
The educationist also argued that
qualified teachers and regular pupils’ assessment were vital assets for
standard education delivery.
He said, “The approach to continuous
improvement of a quality academic programme includes an increased
emphasis on instructional training; revised content and performance
standards; curriculum realignment and adoptions; regular assessment of
student performances; systematic and continuous student report.
“As teachers, we believe effective
teaching brings quality to, and is accountable for, the quality of
educational programmes and student support services. We recognise that
academic freedom is a catalyst for creativity and innovation; and that
technology enhances the educational experience.”
The college, he said, had some of the things that prepare students for lifelong and creative roles.
The South-African principal, however,
advised schools to adopt strategies that would aid continuous pupils’
development in a diversified society.
He said, “To raise standards would not
itself improve pupils’ performances. Pupils should be engaged in the
process and not lose faith in the goal of achieving success.
“For pupils to become fully engaged in
the teaching and learning process, teachers should provide relevant and
meaningful learning opportunities that create and hold students’
interest.
“The school, on the other hand, should
create and support an environment that will assist students feel
genuinely valued for who they are as individuals. This means inter-
relationships, respect and caring for pupils’ well-being are some of the
important priorities of quality education.”
The school’s Executive Director, Mrs. Yemi Lemo, called on parents to step up efforts in developing primary education.
She said, “It is the primary
responsibility of the government to provide qualitative education but it
is also advisable for private individuals to invest in the sector. This
will guarantee the pupils and parents the kind of education they want.”

LG constructs classrooms
LG constructs classrooms
The Apapa Local Government Area in Lagos State says it is poised to wipe out illiteracy in the council.
It has thus begun the construction of new classrooms in the area.
The council Chairman, Mr. Ayodeji
Joseph, who stated this on Wednesday at Arakan Nursery and Primary
School, Apapa, added that there was the need for quality education in
the country.
He said, “I think I am a beneficiary of
public education and I see no reason why leaders in government at any
level will fail to provide standard education if that is what has made
them who they are today. Good and qualitative education is not
negotiable. They are assets that the citizens need in the country.
“I can remember vividly when I was in
the primary school that our motto was ‘Education is the best legacy’. If
education is the best legacy, then why can’t we develop it? For me,
there is nothing better than education. Providing an environment that is
conducive is a means of enhancing our educational standard.”
Stressing the importance of education, the council chairman added that it was an elixir for any country’s growth.
He said, “What many leaders do not know
is that when you tackle the challenges facing the education sector from
the primary level, a lot of things in the other sectors, including
health, and banking, will grow easily.
“This is why we are building classrooms
for all our public schools in a way to upgrade their status. As a
government, we are interested in carrying out our duties. Since the
construction of some of these classrooms started, enrolment in the
council has increased.”

American state, Cross River sign partnership pact
American state, Cross River sign partnership pact
The State of Maryland in the United States of America and Cross River State have signed a sister-state agreement.
While Governor Liyel Imoke signed on
behalf of Cross River, Governor Martin O’Malley signed on behalf of the
State of Maryland, according to a statement on Thursday.
The sister-state relationship, which was
signed in Annapolis, the capital of Maryland, provided for each state, a
legal form of partnering and utilising one another’s best practices in
research, technical assistance, curriculum development and investments
among others.
With the signing of the agreement,
Cross River now partnered with key institutions in Maryland such as the
John Hopkins International Medicine, the University of Maryland,
Maryland Office of Tourism, Maryland Office of Sports, Maryland Center,
Bowie State University, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
and Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.
Governor O’Malley, while speaking at the
event said the partnership would strengthen the existing bond between
Nigeria and his state, even as he hoped the pact would lead to improved
standard of living for the people of the two states.
He said, “Our greatest asset in
Maryland as in Cross River is our human capital. I believe that all of
us understand progress in essentially the same way. It is about the
dignity of our home, the dignity of work and the dignity of every
child’s potential.
“It is about raising our children in a
place that is safe, to be able to give them the ability to learn at
higher levels than their parents before them, to support their families
in more sustainable ways that hold the promise of even a better future
for their children and great grand children.”
Imoke, who was given an award in
recognition of reforms introduced to land administration, said the event
was eminent in the history of the two states.
He said, “This signing marks the
beginning of what we hope will be many years of a rewarding relationship
between Maryland and Cross River.
“I am optimistic about the potentials
and possibilities of this partnership for our development in five key
sectors; health, education, information and communication, technology,
tourism and agriculture.”

World Bank, NACCIMA, partner group for Aba summit
World Bank, NACCIMA, partner group for Aba summit
The
World Bank and Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry,
Mines and Agriculture have partnered the Abia Think Thank Association to
organise a summit in Aba.
Other groups in the collaboration are
World Habitat, Global Initiative, Global Fund, Embassies of United
States, Japan, China, South Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden,
Norway, Australia; High Commissions of United Kingdom and Australia,
among others.
President of Abia Think Tank, Sam
Ohuabunwa, said this during a press conference on Thursday ahead of the
November 20-21 Aba Summit organised to attract investors to the eastern
region.
Ohuabunwa said there was the need for a
partnership between the private and public sectors for growth and
reduction of unemployment in the eastern states.
He said, “A development paradigm that
includes both the private and public sectors. Aba has the lowest
unemployment rate but it may not have the highest wages or profit coming
from various businesses because most of the traders are still in the
informal sector.
“It has a high concentration of Small
and Medium Scale Enterprises, which need to be innovatively
re-invigorated to sustain, deepen and expand their competitive edge in
economic and business dimension.
“Left alone for the government to
handle, the harnessing of these economic opportunities in Aba will
remain in limbo for a long time to come.”
According to him, the summit will correct the degrading effects of the civil war on the growth of the market.
He said, “To set the record straight,
the Biafran war had a lot of effects on Aba market. Aba suffered most
from the war and up till today, it is still suffering to recover to its
full strength. The damages are enormous and it will take time before it
will grow back. The war made a lot of companies to move away from the
region.
“This is why there is a need to develop
Aba by all means because success of the Aba market will make other parts
of the region to develop easily and reduce the population of Igbo in
Lagos. It will, as a matter of fact, stop the embarrassment of deporting
Abians from Lagos.”

EISNL trains engineers in devices procurement, maintenance
EISNL trains engineers in devices procurement, maintenance
Engineering
Solutions and Devices Limited has trained engineers and stakeholders in
the construction industry in facility procurement and maintenance.
The training tagged, ‘Industrial
maintenance optimisation conference,’ included workshops and seminars
for the participants handled by EISNL partners.
The partners are Brook Crompton; SKF; DeWalt; Horizon Conveyor Equipment; Cobra and Sew Eurodrive.
Managing Director of the group, Mr.
Ajibola Olajide, noted that engineers needed to be trained for better
operation of equipment.
He said, “It is not enough to be able to
recognise the equipment, it is important to understand their usage
without necessarily using any guide. This is why special trainings on
procurement and maintenance are compulsory for them.
“We see this as our responsibility and
we are discharging it in the best way possible. Our belief is that by
the time the beneficiaries of the training are leaving here, they will
be better handlers of equipment.”
According to the participants, the training was an eye-opener, which would enhance productivity in companies.
One of them, representing Dangote Cement
Company, Mrs. Hamdalat Akanbi, said the training, if enforced by the
engineers, would bring about development.
“It is a very good thing and very
beneficial. The lessons learnt from the training will, to a large
extent, help the development and growth of every trainee company if
implemented,” she added.
Another participant from Wapco Lafarge, Babatunde Kareem, urged the organisers to expand the scope of the training.
He said, “It is an educative gathering
and has actually exposed a lot of us to the use of our equipment. It is a
standard seminar, but I will prefer the organisers to expand the scope
for our general knowledge.”

NEPC, JETRO collaborate on product profiling
NEPC, JETRO collaborate on product profiling
The
Nigerian Export Promotion Council is partnering the Japan External
Trade Organisation to train Nigerian manufacturers on the importance of
product and business profiling.
The bodies explained during a workshop
organised to strengthen their ties in Lagos that profiling enhances the
acceptance of products and their producers in the market.
The Acting Zonal Coordinator, NEPC,
Lagos, Mrs. Evelyn Obidike, said the training was necessary because many
exporters did not understand the importance of branding their products
to meet international standards.
She said, “We observed that some of our
exporters still don’t understand the importance of creating profiles for
their products and market, especially to Japan.
“This is why we have brought experts
from Japan to explain what is needed to meet the standards of Japan and
other international markets.”
She explained that apart from the
workshop, other events were being organised to ensure that exporters
took full advantage of the opportunities in their trade.
She said, “We also have a trade
exhibition, otherwise known as Food Fair. It is aimed at promoting the
development and diversification of Nigeria’s export trade; assisting in
promoting the development of export-oriented industries; providing
technical assistance to local exporters in such areas as export
procedure and documentation, transportation, financing, marketing
techniques, quality control, export packaging, costing and pricing,
publicity and in other similar areas.”
While urging Nigerians to patronise
locally-made products, Obidike advised manufacturers to get accustomed
to export market requirements.
She said that apart from exposing the
exporters to opportunities in Japanese markets, Nigeria had yet to
maximise exports across countries of the globe, adding that it was
important to develop exportation of value-added products to other
countries and boost earnings from non-oil exports.
The Trade Commissioner, JETRO, Lagos,
Taku Hiroki, during the inspection of the exporters’ products, urged
them to improve on their packaging.
He explained that goods in the Japanese
market were graded based on the quality of products, packaging, product
and business profiling, and standardisation certification.
He said, “Before starting a business,
Japanese companies tend to do a thorough research about the profiles of
the companies and the products involved. It is better to encourage
exporters to start with semi-processed raw agricultural products in
order to enhance market penetration.”
Executive Secretary, Cocoa Processors
Association of Nigeria, Mr. Felix Oladunjoye, who commended the
organisations for the workshop, said the training had exposed the
participants to the standard and requirements of the Japanese market.

Lagos demolishes building, shuts 15 houses
Lagos demolishes building, shuts 15 houses
Lagos
State Building Control Agency on Tuesday demolished a defective
two-storey building on Freeman Street, while it shut 15 others on
Herbert Macaulay, Oloto and Market streets in Ebute Meta, Lagos Mainland
Local Government.
Among the houses sealed off and marked
for demolition were the Palace of the Eze Benard Orjika (Okpoko 1) and
two buildings opposite the house of a lawmaker representing Lagos
Mainland Constituency, Mr. Alao Owolabi.
Our correspondent gathered that the demolished building, which had about 36 rooms, was built 40 years ago.
General Manager, LASBCA, Mrs. Abimbola
Animashaun, explained that the building was demolished after it failed
an integrity test conducted by the agency.
She said the occupants of the building
were notified about the exercise, adding that owners of other sealed
buildings should proceed to the agency’s office for advice.
She said, “We have marked 30 buildings
in this area and among the buildings, five of them will be removed
before the end of the week. Some of them are still waiting for the
result of the integrity test from the Lagos State Material Testing
Agency and definitely we will get it soon to determine further actions.
“After notifying the occupants that the
building was not safe for them, they refused to vacate it. We have been
here more than three times and immediately they see us, they ususally
run away or hide somewhere. They should not go below the minimum
standard by using inferior materials.
“We have sealed about 1,800 properties
and there is no one to come and claim them. The owners are not
forthcoming and if there is no one to claim them, it means we have the
right to go and remove them. People should come to LASBCA, no matter the
situation, to get advice. Some of them have removed our seals and they
are going to be prosecuted.”
However, there was drama when residents
of the Eze’s palace and that of a house located at 8, Herbert Macaulay
Street, protested against sealing of their houses.
Some of the residents accused LASBCA of
bias in their mode of operation, arguing that “some buildings that are
defective were spared”.
A lady, who refused to vacate the Eze’s
palace, said, “This is totally illegal. We have done everything required
of us. We were told to conduct an integrity test and we have done that
but the government refused to give us the result and receipt for our
payment.”

Don’t neglect the needy, group urges Nigerians
Nigerians
and government at all levels must provide necessary assistant to the
poor people for even development in the society, the Zakat and Sadaqat
Foundation has urged.
Executive Director of the group, Abdullahi Shuaib, gave the advice during a Mini-Zakat distribution in Lagos.
He noted that assisting the less-privileged would give hope to the needy.
He said, “We must constantly be adding
value to the lives of distressed Nigerians who were almost losing hope
and faith in search for their succour. Their happiness is our happiness
and their sadness is ours.
“Just as we feel the pain of the
less-privileged in our midst, our hearts are gladdened that some
Nigerians (Zakat payers) have donated to assist the needy. Thus 46
people that are benefitting from the N5.2m raised.”
Shuaib called on well-meaning Nigerians to assist government in its fight against poverty.#
“We are committed to completing the
efforts of both local and state government bearing in mind that
government alone cannot respond and satisfy all the needs of the
citizenry. We count on kind-hearted and philanthropic Nigerians to
support our cause by donating,” he said.

Lagos abandons school, library over structural defects
Lagos abandons school, library over structural defects

The abandoned school
Two
edifices that should ordinarily elicit pride in the residents of Ebute
Meta, in Lagos Mainland Local Government, Lagos State, are now causing
them fear and embarrassment.
The buildings – Nawair-Ud-Deen Senior
Secondary School complex and Lagos Mainland Local Government Library-
located at Kadara and Herbert Macaulay streets respectively, are
desolate, dilapidated and in a state of disrepair.
When our correspondent visited the
buildings, he reported that they had been closed down by the government.
They also showed signs of long period of abandonment.
It was observed that the foundations of
the buildings in both places had sunk into the ground, while their walls
had visible cracks.
It was also noticed that grasses had
been left to grow without control at the NUD school, while the pillars
of the library building were gradually tearing apart.
It was gathered that the library, which
was inaugurated in 2002 by a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju
Bola Tinubu, was closed down in 2012 because it was showing signs of
structural decay. The school was also shut at the same period.
Some residents of the area wondered why
the buildings could be defective just after 11 years of construction.
They urged the government to demolish the dilapidated buildings instead
of leaving it to become dens of criminals.
Our correspondent gathered that the
pupils of the school had been moved to other secondary schools in Yaba
Local Development Council.
It was also learnt that the library was
closed down with its books inside it and since then, no alternative
arrangement had been made for pupils in the area.
Occupants of houses surrounding one of the defective buildings, however, urged the government to come to their aid.
One of them, who pleaded anonymity,
said, “Our fear is that grasses have taken over the school. Before you
know it, some dangerous animals like snakes will found abode there.
Government should not wait till we have a tragedy before acting.”
Another resident, Rasheed Ajenifuja, advised the government to demolish the structures and build more befitting ones.
An elder in the community, identified
simply as Pa Joe, explained that the frequent rate of building collapse
in the area had made residents apprehensive about the two structures.
“The best thing to do now is for government to demolish them and give us a new school and a new library,” he said.
Another resident, Ganiyu Adeniyi, said
he was surprised that the state government would abandon two
institutions which could boost the future of the youth in the area.
But a councillor in LMLG, who preferred
not to be mentioned, said the legislature and the executive of the
council had agreed that experts should be taken to the buildings to
examine them for repairs.
He said, “We are worried that we don’t
have any library in this area again and the only senior secondary school
we have has also been locked up.”
The General Manager, Lagos State
Building and Control Agency, Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun, however said the
government would conduct integrity test on the buildings to know their
level of damage.
She said, “It depends on the level of
damage. It is not enough to say a building is defective. If it is
something that can be amended or needs to be demolished, that will be
known after integrity test have been conducted.”

FG’s many ‘sins’ against Nigerian students
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
| credits: File copy
| credits: File copy
No
doubt, the cream of the nation’s students welcomed Dr. Goodluck
Jonathan as the President of Nigeria in 2011, considering his academic
status which was expected to rub off on the nation’s education sector.
Interestingly, Jonathan holds a
Bachelor’s degree in Zoology in which he attained Second Class Honours.
He holds a Master’s degree in Hydrobiology and Fisheries biology, and a
PhD degree in Zoology from the University of Port Harcourt. He worked
as an education inspector, lecturer, and environmental-protection
officer before his foray into politics around 1998.
Aside from the outstanding educational
qualification of the President, the Minister of Education, Ruqayattu
Rufai, is also a Professor who obtained PhD in Education from the West
Virginia University, USA in 1991.
One had expected that with the
educational qualifications of President Jonathan and other key players
in the sector, the country was on its way to strike-free academic
sessions, but the reverse seems to have been the case.
The present industrial action by the
university teachers has been worrisome. Why will a government enter into
an agreement without implementing it? Embarrassingly, the Minister of
Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, argued that the Federal Government cannot
afford the demand of ASUU.
Also, the killings of innocent students,
pupils and teachers under this administration by terrorists have been
disturbing. Nigerian students are no longer safe. What about the killing
of 30 pupils including teachers in Yobe State resulting in the closure
of schools in the state? It behoves the government to ensure maximum
security for the students.
To compound the government’s neglect of
the sector, the allocation of N424billion to the sector out of the
nation’s N5trillion appears imaginary as this has not translated into
improvement in the sector. The votes meant for the running the Ministry
of Education, plus all of its Federal Universities, Federal
Polytechnics, all Colleges of Education, and all FG Colleges and Unity
schools have made no significant difference.
All we know is that Nigeria has enormous
potential to be a rich country but that has not translated into
development for our education sector.
Besides, the wound inflicted on students
by fuel subsidy removal has yet to heal. We still feel the pains as we
live today in difficult times. Cost of transport, cost of textbooks and
other educational materials have increased drastically. Ironically,
this government is going down as the most unfriendly to the nation’s
students.

Mummy Jonathan’s hostel sparks controversy
Mummy Jonathan’s hostel sparks controversy
The decision of President Goodluck Jonathan’s mother, Eunice, to donate a two-block hostel to the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, raises more questions than answers, SEGUN OLUGBILE and SODIQ OYELEKE report
The donation of hostel accommodation to any public academic institution, particularly any of the nation’s universities, should ordinarily be a commendable initiative. This is because many, if not all public universities in the country, have inadequate hostel facilities for their students.
Perhaps, this explains why a room that is to accommodate four students would “house” at least eight undergraduates in these institutions. Indeed, in some universities, it could be more. The development, therefore, encourages, what students call “squatting” in many of the residential public universities.
So, when President Goodluck Jonathan’s mother, Eunice, penultimate Friday donated a two-block hostel to the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, she was very likely to have thought of easing the burden, as it were, faced by students of the institution. But the donation has thrown up a whiff of controversy in the sector. Instead of singing her praises, many stakeholders are locking horns over the desirability or otherwise of the offer.
Many Nigerians, who commented on the gesture, even wondered how the woman got the money to execute the project. They also wondered why she could not use her influence to prevail on her son to accede to the requests of the striking university lecturers so that students could go back to school to continue their studies. They equally inferred that the action was to skew public opinion in the favour of her son, who, political analysts say, is planning to seek a second term in office in 2015.
But while these calculations are going on, some members of the benefiting university community and their Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, look at the woman’s offer from a different perspective. They have, indeed, described the donation as timely and an action capable of cushioning the effect of inadequate accommodation in the two-year-old university.
Aluko, in a statement on the university website, told the pioneer students of the university, who just finished their second semester examination, that on return to the school from holiday, they would enjoy a new lease of life via the new hostel.
He added, “The twin-block building donated by the mother of President Goodluck Jonathan, Eunice Jonathan, will accommodate 64 female students and will go a long way in reducing the challenges of inadequate accommodation. We just want to restructure the hostel accommodation in order to give you the best. I assure you that plans are on to ensure that when you return, all of you will be accommodated in the hostel.”
The students, the statement added, could not hide their excitement as they expressed gratitude to the President’s mother and the management for the gesture. Of course, the students have every reason to applaud the President’s mother for the offer. Hitherto, it was learnt, they did not enjoy their stay on campus due to inadequate hostel facilities.
But some other Nigerians have taken to the social media to register their displeasure at the decision, wondering why the President’s mother could not use her influence to prevail on her son to accede to the requests of the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, who have been on an industrial action for about six weeks.
An anonymous commentator on Linda Ikeji blogspot.com asked, “What does she do for a living again? It’s 2015.”
Supporting this, another Nigerian, who simply identified himself as Fehintola, wrote, “Where does she work or where did she get the money? 2015, on the way.”
Just as some are questioning the source of Eunice’s wealth and linking the donation to 2015 politics, some others are raising other questions, which some critics may refer to as salient.
For instance, an anonymous blogger wrote, “They are donating hostels while the students are at home because of the ASUU strike.”
Also, another unnamed commentator stated, “President Goodluck, please be wise. Do not add more problems to the ones on ground. Yes, the mum of a president will be rich but she could have opened an orphanage home rather than engaging in this publicity stunt.”
Some others too are, however, commending the President’s mother for the offer. One of them, Aderinto Ameenah, said, “Well done, Madam Jonathan.” Another one, who referred to himself as Mich, stated, “Not bad for a President’s mother.”
Yet, as commentators express these divergent views about the development, the issue of how the nation’s political leaders and their close relations acquire their “sudden wealth” has come to the front burner. Those who spoke on the issue, insisted that the source of a donor’s wealth should be of concern to the benefitting university as well as other stakeholders. But some lecturers have also expressed divergent views.
A lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr. Kehinde Kester, said there was nothing wrong in helping a university.
He added, “That is why most universities have stopped giving out honorary degrees to people because it is not good for a university to celebrate mediocre persons. But on this matter, it is difficult for anybody to say that the President mother is corrupt. At least, she is not in government; and neither is she a civil servant. So, donating a hostel to a university in her town is a welcome development.”
Another lecturer, Abiodun Olajide, however, noted that the response of Nigerians to the debate was good.
He said, “With what you say Nigerians’ reactions are, I’m happy because a lot of leaders go away with their unethical practice because we do not ask questions. We should ask questions. We should put our leaders on their toes and we should stop accepting gifts from people whose source of wealth we do not know.”
Beyond these comments, the picture painted of the hostels in some of the universities, by a cross-section of students, is nothing to celebrate. According to them, apart from the fact that the hostels are not enough, the existing ones are in bad shape and in decay.
A student of the University of Abuja, identified as Hammed, decried the standard and the quality of hostel facilities in the school. According to him, no fewer than 10 students use an accommodation space that is meant for four students.
He said, “Our hostels are not good enough. This has resulted in squatting among the students. The funniest thing is that if you do not even have strong connections in the school, you may not have the opportunity to share in these crowded rooms.”
Also, a student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Omotayo Banji, who assessed the situation, frowned on the accommodation fees paid in the school.
She noted that it was better to get accommodation outside the school than to reside in the hostels.
She added, “The hostels are not only unaffordable, they are also not qualitative. Though it is a federal university, we still pay between N18, 000 and N30, 000 annually for accommodation when one can get it cheaper outside the school premises.”
Another student from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, identified as Suliat, noted that there was need to improve the hostel facilities in the institution.
She particularly decried the way her colleagues use the hostels, saying, “The ones that are good are those that are just renovated. But I will not blame only the government for the poor state of the hostels. I think the students are also responsible for it. We do not for manage the facilities well.”
According to Bamise, of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, the structure of the hostels in the institution is “archaic”. He urged the university management to collaborate with private investors and education stakeholders to develop quality hostel for the students.
He said, “The structures are strong but they are old designs. I will not say we have a standard hostel but the fact is that we are getting the worth of what we are paying for. I do not think there is any university in Nigeria where students can get accommodation with just N3, 000 any longer.
“Nevertheless, the school management needs to collaborate with investors in the construction of new hostels that will meet international standard. The hostels are not adequate and the number of students allocated to a room is relatively in excess.”
